Romance is thinking about your significant other when you are supposed to be thinking of something else. – Nicholas Sparks
What is a May/December Romance? It’s falling in love with a person who is much older than you. There’s no official age difference which defines a “May/December” romance. “May/December” comes from one of the lovers being in the “spring” of their life (young) and the other being in the “winter” of their life. (old)
Some examples include: Anna Nicole Smith and J. Howard Marshall II. There’s also Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. Do “May/December” romances work despite the age gap? Is age inconsequential or insurmountable?

May/December romances have several challenges, but isn’t romance about overcoming challenges with unlimited hope?
Challenge #1 – Family Acceptance
Your family members maybe be shocked by your May/December romance. They might call you a “cougar” or talk about your “trophy wife.” Once family members get to know your significant other, they’ll start to feel comfortable. It just takes time. What might help:
Make sure your family knows your significant other can’t be excluded from family functions. Understand parents are important and your significant other will want to remain in their parents’ lives.
Challenge #2 – Kids
To have them or not. Discuss this upfront in your romance/relationship. If one partner can’t have kids, but it’s important, adoption might be a option.
Challenge #3 – Blended Families
If you have children involved from your significant other’s previous relationships, don’t try to win over the children by acting their age. They’ll have more respect for you if you act your age.
Challenge #4 – Illnesses
Talk about illnesses and how to manage them early in your romance/relationship. Illnesses like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are best dealt with before they happen. If your illnesses are minor, do your best to support your significant other if they are still physically active.
Challenge #5 – Don’t blame age
If you’re having problems, don’t blame the age. Most couples have the same problems regardless of age. Work on the problem and don’t use age as an excuse.
All of these challenges offer the romance writer a chance to write some great conflict and resolution.
Embrace what you have in common. Do you like to travel? Watch movies? Read? Go for walks? Own a pet? Enjoying activities together will keep the spark alive.

I spotted this poll and had to take a look. I love movies, especially older, romantic ones. It was a really hard choice, the movies you have given as options are all stellar movies. In the end, I had to go for Atonement. I think that's partly because I love the book, though.
I didn’t read the book, but I loved the movie. It was well done.

Dr. Zhivago was very romantic to me. When Dr. Zhivago saw who he thought was Lara from a streetcar, exited it and died from a heart attack. That was so moving. Great story.
It’s been a while since I watched Dr. Zhivago. I do remember thinking it was interesting.

My favorite is Platoon. Love the newsletter.

The movie I would have chosen is "In Love and War", starring Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell (NCIS L.A.). This is the true story of young Ernest Hemingway's romance with an older nurse (Agnes Von something) during World War I. He was wounded and was given some honor that the Italians rarely give foreigners. I have always been enamored of Ernest Hemingway and this movie did not disappoint me. I seem to be drawn to things about World War I.
In that vein, you might be interested in the miniseries, "ANZAC Girls," which is about the nurses from Australia and New Zealand who were part of the fighting effort in WW I. It was great - I think it came out in 2013.
Also, Downton Abbey, Season 2 has some great stuff about World War I.
I like the movies you suggested, that I have seen. I have not seen Dear John or Atonement. Of the other ones, I like Pearl Harbor the best I think. The original Dr. Zhivago was also a great film, but I always liked the book better, having read it in a Russian Literature course in college.
Again, fine work in your Newsletter!
I will definitely put “In Love and War” on my list. “ANZAC Girls,” also sounds interesting. I saw Downton Abbey Season 2 and was very worried for Matthew. I’m glad he made it home!
