Letter from the editor

When I've been browsing through WDC lately, I've seen a lot of raffles and even participated in a few. These are a type of activity that has been around since before I even joined the site back in 2006.

Raffles themselves run pretty much like they do in the real world, if you've ever participated in one. You purchase a ticket for the set price for yourself or for others and then have a chance to win part of the pot, or prizes, at a random draw.

What you need do to begin a raffle is to create an item for it. This has a lot of different types you could from including a Survey, cNotes, but most popular is the Message Forum. The forum allows members to post and purchase tickets by including gift points in the post, without any of the fees that come out of both the survey and cNote items. In the forum, you would want to list the prizes that are being given away, how much tickets are, who benefits from this raffle, and the dates/times that the raffle will run.

After that, I would recommend setting up a Group item where Gift Points can be sent, whether they are donation or ticket purchases. This will help keep them separate from your own so that you can more easily distribute them to those you chose to benefit from your raffle.

Here are a few quick tips for setting up a raffle:

*Starr* Set a ticket price.

*Staro* Decide who will benefit from your raffle.

*Star* When is your raffle going to run and have you clearly shown those in the raffle item?

*Starg* Do you have a place set up to keep the Gift Points?

*Starb* Have you shown all of the prizes that members can win?

*Starv* Enjoy running the raffle and use it as a way to connect to more members of the WDC community!

Raffles are rather easy to start and operate, so long as you can keep track of a large number of participants and ticket numbers. I would recommended using Google Docs or a Google Spreadsheet to keep track of them. That's how I do it and find organization is a key factor in successfully running a raffle. So get out there and enjoy! *Bigsmile*
