Military Romance Novels: Why We Love Them

Military romance novels make up a huge portion of the romance novels being read today. Just one search on Goodreads for "popular military romance books" came up with a list of 2,457! From the Army to the Air Force, from military heroes to military heroines. there's something for everyone on the list.

What makes military romance novels so popular? I can think of a few reasons.

1) America is a patriotic country, perhaps since 9/11 more than ever. We love to read about heroes fighting for our country. There is a lot of pride in knowing that our servicemen and women are willing to fight for our freedoms.

2) Women love a man in uniform. It's true! Many women fantasize about police officers, fire fighters, and military men, so seeing them in romance novels seems like an obvious choice.

3) There is a lot at stake with a military hero. They're more intense, stronger (not just physically), and devoted to their loved ones. There may also be a sense of longing between a hero and heroine, or an urgency because of an inherent danger (going off to war, for example).

4) Great novels have lots of conflict, and military romantic heroes and heroines face interpersonal conflicts at a more intense level due to the nature of the job. Let's be honest, even the steamiest of novels need a story line too!

If you haven't discovered military romance novels yet, give them a try. They could be your cup of tea!
