My first ever newsletter as a regular editor here was "Contests & Activities Newsletter (February 17, 2010)" . After five years, I have now reached my last (scheduled) edition. I hope you enjoyed my newsletters, the information about the contests and activities on the site as well as other tips and tricks for the use of this wonderful site as it has gone through so many transformations in these recent years. |

Measure Your Success on Writing.Com
How is success on Writing.Com even measured? Is is our community recognition? Years on the site? Case color? Number of items in our portfolio?
Frankly, I think that the success of each of us has nothing to do with any of the above markers. Those are all external. Your personal success on this writing site is found in your own path here. Did you find this site in search for reviews for your writing? Did you join the site to take part in classes to learn better English? Were you looking for a place to mingle with people who have the same passion as you: writing?
No matter what your reason was to seek out this type of site, your success is 100% your own. Me, I was two-finger eagle search typing when I came here. I wrote English with German punctuation and syntax.
While I have an alright number of community recognition, will celebrate seven years on the site in May, and was promoted to moderator - my true successes in terms of my personal development are much more profound.
I saw here people who hacked out 900 words in 15 minutes. That finally gave me the drive to use my 10-finger typing tutor on my computer. I have no idea how many words I type in a minute, but I type with all my fingers without having to look at the keyboard.
As you can see in the community tab of my portfolio, I have racked up 4,904 reviews since I joined here. The vast majority of those reviews were made in my first two years on the site. I learned the differences between US and UK English as well as other regional differences. While reviewing, I kept a dictionary by my side to look up words. I can't even count the number of words I learned in that time. For instance the difference between "effect" and "affect" can easily get lost. (I still struggle with "lie" and "lay.")
Finally, I took a comma class with the amazing Winnie Kay . While I still make mistakes (what is a comma splice? sounds dangerous ), I don't punctuate my sentences in German grammar any longer.
As you see: my success here is not measured by numbers or colors. The real things I wanted and needed from the site, I got by being around, accepting the challenge to make my writing better, and by listening to the advice of my fellow writers.
Your success here can only be measured by your own goals. If you haven't achieved them yet - get to work. It's all here for you.

In response to my last newsletter "Annual Newbie Host Round Up" , I got the following replies:
Andy~hating university wrote: This is a great newsletter and very informative.
It's great seeing the contests hosted by us Newbies getting some much needed exposure - though it's brilliant to see mine at the very top of the list . It's not easy getting our groups and contests noticed on the whole, and this is something that you really do seem to appreciate.
I'm familiar with some of the groups and contests you have highlighted, but some I've never even heard of.
Keep up the great work of plugging us Newbies!
You're welcome. And it's only well deserved for you and other new members who don't stand around wondering but instead jump in, take risks, and become integral parts of this site.
