Letter from the editor

Dear readers,

It is an honour to be the new Editor for this newsletter. Because of the nature of this newsletter, it is one of the most personal ones on Writing.Com, in my opinion. Therefore I think my first newsletter will be a bit personal, to allow you to get to know me.

I was watching the film Finding Neverland last night. For those who have not watched this film; it is about the author of Peter Pan. It’s also about using your imagination and believing. Watching it, it struck me that maybe the reason why I have pretty much been unable to write is because I’ve started to fear my imagination and have stopped believing in many things I was open to, before.

Last year I had a big nervous breakdown. At the end of October, always a difficult time of year for me, all the bad things that had happened in my past hit me all at once. As I’m sure you can imagine this was not a pleasant experience. My world was dark. My mind was dark. I would often be on my knees begging God for this darkness to go away. I was certain that this was it; I’d gone insane and would end up in a padded room for the rest of my life. Not so.

I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other related anxiety disorders. For the last year I have battled this and am slowly getting better. I’ve been working in a lovely job for seven months now and am doing well with it. I am facing my fears and starting to live a normal life again. But I can’t seem to write. I seem to fear my imagination because it is so vivid and perhaps I am scared of the thoughts and images my mind is capable of.

I used to daydream all the time. There would constantly be a story or two roaming through my mind. Stories of wonderful worlds and creatures, beauty and magic. I used to believe in elves and dragons, faeries and vampires. Not that I’ve ever seen one but I didn’t have to. I just knew there had to be more to this world than what we can see.

Over the past year I have shut all that out. Nowadays I talk about work, finance, what needs to be done around the house… For my escape into other worlds I read and cautiously allow my mind to travel the various paths of the characters I read about.

You may wonder what my personal story has to do with spirituality. During the darkest of my days and nights I would not have managed without reading. When I was scared I would read Terry Pratchett novels. No matter what, the adventures of his characters and his unique sense of humour made me giggle. A friend of mine sent me a Chicken Soup book and when I needed to read about love and the good in others, I would read some of the stories. I would read Harry Potter books, Bridget Jones, Arthurian Legends. Reading made the world of difference to me, and still does.

I may not be able to write just yet, but I do read. A lot. I think we all need a bit of magic and wonder in our lives, and that escape into other worlds – into the imagination of an author. Without reading, my soul would have truly roamed in darkness.

So if you ever need a reason to write, just think what a difference your words might make to another person, somewhere out there.
