Letter from the editor

Entering a contest on Writing.Com can be scary for some members, as I remember it was when I joined many years ago. It takes a lot of courage to put any part of your work on this site, much less submitting it to a person or group of people who are going to judge it. So how can you gather the confidence in your own writing to enter contests on WDC?

The best thing to do with a contest is to jump right in. Even if you don't think that you're ready for it, give entering a chance. If your writing may not be up to the others in the contest, you can always learn from feedback of the judge and by reading the work of those who placed higher than you. Getting the feedback from the judges can be crucial in improving your work for future contests and to help you get more accustomed to entering more contests. Find a genre or type of writing (short story, poetry, articles, etc.) and enter something you enjoy writing about.

Now, you may not be the type of person to just jump in with entering contests, so here are a few ways to help you feel better about entering contests:

*Starr* Write for yourself, then look for a contest to enter.

*Staro* Read previous contest entries.

*Star* Look up reviews from the contest judge.

*Starg* Find a contest with a prompt you enjoy.

*Starb* Ask others about their experience with a particular contest.

*Starv* Make entering a contest a social event by posting to your newsfeed, then you're sharing that with others..

The best way to get over being nervous about entering contests is to just do it. Whether you like to research various contests and figure out how they run or just jump head first into one with nothing except knowing the rules, there are plenty of contests to be found here. Go out of your comfort zone and just give it a try. If you don't enter, you'll never know what you could be missing!

Ask & Answer

My question for you this time: What are you most afraid of when entering a contest?

Question from before: What do you like to do on a rainy day?

Siobhan Falen Author Icon replied: Write! Seriously, right now it is monsoon season and I have my computer set up next to my window. I have an unobstructed view of the sudden downpours, the dance of light followed by the house shaking thunder, the wind trying to snap trees in half... needless to say, I am inspired by the darkness outside my window. It's my favorite time of the year and every storm prompts more stories.

Quick-Quill Author Icon replied: If its winter, I curl up in a blanket, read a book, write or watch TV. I will dig around to find my bag of yarn and crochet something. I make coffee or hot mint chocolate to drink or I might be in the mood for a pot of good Teavanna tea.

BIG BAD WOLF is Howling Author Icon replied: Very simple - read a good book.
