That's what Writing.com is all about!
It's such an exciting place with so many things you want to get involved in, that after a time, you can't really catch up with it all. You forget that judging can be quite time consuming. The donations you've made to activities arrive at the worst time possible and there is no way out. You have to fulfill them. Running your own contests and activities can take up a lot of your time as well. If you don't prioritize, you'll regret taking so much on, because when the time comes to do what you're supposed to, that time is simply not there.
What do you do then?
I've seen people bail out on their package donations quite often. No news, no word, no email. Nothing. You don't want to do that. We all have a bad day, or week, or month and things come up. And that is exactly why you should think before agreeing to do certain things. There's nothing worse than having to return the payment for a donation because a person couldn't keep up their part of the deal. Most people take it upon themselves then to do what others couldn't.
That is always a possibility when running activities. You have to be prepared to take on the extra load just in case your donors can't fulfill their packages. There's not much you can do about this kind of problem. You hold on to a naughty list and mark those who could potentially bail out on you, but that's as far as it goes. If you create it and you run it, it's your responsibility. No excuses.
All of us are willing to help here. You just need to ask. It's a great thing. But some of us tend to take on more than we can handle. Be careful with that. When you have so many things going on at once, you wear yourself out and you reach the point where it's just not fun any longer. Some might disagree, but most people don't like to be swamped with chores. We still want to have time to write for ourselves.
Prioritize!
Do things on a monthly basis and change things up so it's not a repetitive routine. Switch your focus from one to the other. If you love writing, enter contests for a month. The next month, you can volunteer to judge contests. Donate here and there, but know the date when those donations will be due. Try not to plan anything big around that time so you can get it done and not dread it. If you run your own activities while participating everywhere else, schedule a day or two in a week when you have plenty of time to update those.
I am one of those people whose to-do list grows and grows. Things pile up to the point where certain items are only a vague memory. If you can handle so much work, go for it! I encourage you. Writing.com loves over achievers! However, if you can't, take a different approach. I like to stay active at all times, but I switch it up. One month I focus on activities. The next, on reviews and writing. I like to donate packages as often as I can, especially if I'm low on Gift Points, but I keep them light - a few reviews, a signature or two, mixed up with a Merit Badge and/or Awardicon. Tickets to other activities can also be a great package donation and it doesn't require much time on your part to fulfill those.
So, next time you raise your to volunteer, donate, participate, lend a hand, keep in mind how much time you have to do all that in order to do it the right way.
~ Gaby
