Did you write something on New Year's Day, then you will be writing everyday in 2013. It does not matter whether you wrote a short story, novel chapter, poem, character sketch, or something else. What a person does on January 1, he or she will do everyday for the next year. At least, that is what my Grandmother thought, so there were certain things she did not do on New Year's Day. I am not sure whether Grandma was right or wrong, but the concept made sense to me when I was a child and it still makes sense to me at 66.
If you did not write anything on January 1, it is not too late to start. January is the first month of 2013 you can begin writing now, by setting aside sometime to sit down and write. If you cannot think of anything to write, then describe the weather, the sky, or an interesting person you encountered during the day. Once you have the description then begin a science fiction or fantasy story using that description.
All you have to do is find a place to write and write a specific amount of words each day. I cannot tell you how many words to write because that is something each person must decide for his or herself. I can only encourage you to write. There are several daily writing challenges on writing.com, so check them out and write a story or poem responding to the prompts. Since the prompts are broad enough to cover any genre, this is one way to make sure you write everyday. In addition to the writing challenges and contest there are Interactive Stories that encourages a person to write everyday.
Happy New Year! I encourage all science fiction and fantasy writers to make 2013 the year for writing science fiction and fantasy.

Excerpt: We’d failed. That much was obvious. Overhead, the sky burned. Smoke filled the air, filled my lungs. Clouds of ash billowed over the tops of corporate buildings, gas spewed forth from the gaping chasms that forked across our streets. How did this happen? How did we come to this?

Excerpt: After four emperors the Empire came to an important turning point with the fifth. With his ascension, Desiderius, made it his personal crusade to root out the new cult as he described it that had risen in the east. But his error was that the legion stationed in Zion had been converted to the new faith. Soon a civil war erupted where non-existed before. That legion commanded by the brilliant Adeodatus Valerius who saw the innovations used by the pagon mysticist priests and temples and took then and converted them to practical use...
Excerpt: Saturnian Gray took off one day
and headed into space.
He piloted his UFO
with alien-like grace.

Excerpt: Coren slowly browsed the grocery section of the small gas station. She'd meandered half way down the front aisle and stopped, not really paying attention to anything but her search for an adequate snack for the trip back.
Excerpt: She slid her fingers along the wall of the tunnel. Her toes felt the edge of the stone path too late and she landed on sticks and mud. “Help! Anybody here?”

Excerpt: The throne room was tomb silent; the creaking of the rope and her own breathing the only sounds as Kieran Nightshade descended from the rafters. Thin shafts of moonlight streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows were the only illumination, making the floor seem further away than it was. Well, not the only illumination, Kieran thought, spying her objective in the glass case next to the throne on the far side of the room.

Excerpt: I crawl slowly forward from underneath the unoccupied bed, peering out into the room from my hiding spot. I stop about a foot from the open edge and strain my ears for any noises, my bare stomach brushing the cold wooden floor. I shiver silently and continue to listen, testing the air for any sign of life.

Excerpt: Hello, come have a seat. I am Liccora and this is my dragon friend Da’mass. We would like to tell you a story of how we meet and the adventures that we had. It was back in a time when most of the people did their best to keep away from the dragons and dragons where wild.

Excerpt: Drea lead the way, Ashlyn trailing behind. The pace was similar, but Drea’s determined march was at stark contrast to her sister’s dreamy skipping.

Excerpt: Her light had gone, her eyes had closed
Her life and love were lost.
The life of flight, the flame, the fight
Had vanished with her breath.

Excerpt: Between the late 21st century and the early 22nd century, two viruses had been unleashed into the world, affecting the majority of the population. One virus turned people into zombie-like creatures that craved any form of raw meat, including human flesh. There was no humanity in them. The other virus turned people into humanoid versions of animals- typically the last animal they had touched, eaten, or worn. They tended to retain their memories, and their humanity, for the most part.

Quick-Quill writes: I am sorry to say I have not reached the place where my characters take over. I'm not sure why or how. I hope to achieve that status some day and then I might be a great novelist.
jim1184 writes: Your News letter topic is great. This phenomenon is occuring frequently in my novel. Different characters a reveling, things about themselves not on my character cards. Like the Queen of Dragons was actually afraid of them. Something I dealt with in one chapter and moved on. I may go back and play with that more later. I am courious if this happens to other writers on a regular basis. Thanks Jim
BIG BAD WOLF is Howling writes: In my one Zena story, I was going to go on a path where the mayor of this town was corrupt. Instead, I went down the lines of a zombie apocalypse.
Naoru writes: I am of the opinion that the characters should have so much will as they can and that we doesnt really write stuff but we discover storys that are already done and put them into writing. Its more exciting, more creative that way when character come to life and take actions in the plot and if youm the author, didnt expect that is going to surprise even more the readers. Its like a win-win situation.
Do you have a specific time or place to write? Do you have a favorite writing activity or challenge on writing.com that encourages you to write science fiction or fantasy? Do you prefer to write science fiction or fantasy?
