Letter from the editor

Do you ever follow the same path, never deviating, and you do this so often, that you forget about some of the other routes? It then takes somebody to point it out, that you may have been taking the long route to get to that coffee shop, simply because that is how you found it in the first place. Maybe you have been traveling the same path to find a source, when there is another, easier path, you simply forgot was there.

This was brought to my attention last week. A friend wanted to know if there was a complete list of all of the moderators. Of course, being someone to help out, I went searching through the pages to see if I could find a list. Now, I am one who has to learn the hard way. Show me how to do it, and I will forget a step or two, at least for the first few tries, but let me do it, with you over my shoulder for guidance, and I will have it down 100% every time. So where do you think, being a moderator, I went to find this list? Well of course I went to the moderator forum. Every case color has its own forum, where they congratulate and announce the new promotions. So I started there, typing each name into a list, to send to this friend. I went all the way back to the inception of the forum. Though, it didn't click at the time, that the forum may have been created after there were already a few moderators out there, and I was taking the long route to solving this dilemma. I created my list and sent it on to my friend, never realizing the task which took almost an hour, could have been done in about fifteen minutes.

Then, a few days ago, while searching through the submitted comments of past newsletters, I stumbled upon one particular comment that had me thinking back on the incident listed above. Quick-Quill Author Icon had submitted the following remark, the full comment is listed below in the ASK AND ANSWER section of the newsletter: You might want to add how to find newbies. If they are not listed somewhere, is there a way to find them by sign-up dates? This would be a nice way for people to connect and encourage them join groups, find their way around the site.

There are several groups, that for one reason or another, need a list of authors with specifications. Whether it be someone looking for newbies, or to locate who has the most items in their port, there is an easy way to find this information. To the left of the screen, underneath the five horizontal icons, is a list of four: Reading, Writing, Authors, and Reviews. If you click on, AUTHORS  Open in new Window., you will be directed to another screen.

Now you are on the main AUTHORS page. In the center of the page, in the highlighted box...I don't know what color, mine is blue, what highlight did you use? Back to where I was, oh yes, the center of the page. I am skipping the lists, and going right down to the sort options. From here it is really personal preference, and determined by what you are searching for. If for instance, I was searching for a complete list of preferred authors, I would sort by Highest level first, then select go. This would take me to the page of authors starting with the highest case level, which is red. I would then select the NEXT page, and keep doing so, until the first preferred author appeared. In today's search, it appears on page three, for those that are interested.

Let's say that I was going to be doing some reviewing for "Newbie Welcome WagonOpen in new Window. or sending some scribbles out for "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window.. To find authors which fit into the correct category for these groups, I would go back to AUTHORS  Open in new Window., and under the sort option, I would select Newest Account First  Open in new Window.. You now have the first fifty of the newest authors listed, often referred to affectionately as NEWBIES.

Now that you know how to search for Newbies, case colors, and more, I challenge you to use this feature and review one person from each case color. Whether you select to review the person with the most items in their port, or the item that was most recently changed, you can use the AUTHORS  Open in new Window. page, for easy guidance in selecting who to review.

You now know how to find authors!

Thank you. Though I try to come up with some good questions and ideas to spark reader feedback, it is often hit or miss.

Quick-Quill Author Icon~Great Newsletter! I love the idea. You might want to add how to find newbies. If they are not listed somewhere, is there a way to find them by sign-up dates? This would be a nice way for people to connect and encourage them join groups, find their way around the site.
You have asked a great question, and though this isn't the NEWBIE newsletter, many could benefit from such an answer. That being said, you have given me a direction to go for the topic of this week's newsletter. Thank you for being the inspiration behind it.
