There are many reasons why novelists write - but they all have one thing in common: a need to create an alternative world. ~ John Fowles
Why do writers write? Because it isn't there. ~ Thomas Berger

Why write about another world or another dimension or sphere of existence? I read a story once about a rabbit and a tiger. The story went somewhat like this. I read the story several years ago, so this is as near to it as I can get.
The rabbit was an author and he was walking through the jungle one day contemplating his next novel. A tiger came up to him and said, "Hello." The rabbit turned and fled. The tiger, confused by the rabbit's reaction, called to the rabbit, "Mr. Rabbit, wait! I'd like to ask you a question."
The rabbit turned around and answered the tiger. "Stay where you are, Mr. Tiger, and I'll answer your question." The tiger reminded where he was, far enough from the rabbit so that the rabbit could escape if the he attacked. "I've caught several rabbits by talking to them; they were so surprised at meeting a talking tiger that they froze. Why weren't you surprised." "Because," smiled the rabbit, "I was just considering writing a story about a talking tiger."
The moral to that story was that it is a writer's job to prepare their readers for the unknown. My question: Is one of the reasons we have the desire to write in order to prepare others to consider the unknown? Do we write simply for the entertainment value of the story? This is something we, as writers, need to consider. What is the mission statement of a speculative fiction author?

"Now Jessabel, remember, you must be presentable at all times," said an elderly anthro vixen.
Lind sat by the window next to her father's bed in the chill, cramped room. The soft, relentless rain pattered against the cracked glass.

BIG BAD WOLF is Howling writes: It all depends on what one considers a dystopia, or a utopia. If a nation conquers another, and there is no trouble for a long time, the Victors might enjoy it. The Vanquished though, just might be biding their time, to strike back.
Midnight Dawn writes: I actually have two dystopian SF short stories, if you are interested. The one linked skews towards a Young Adult audience, and it is probably a more traditional dystopian future novel. I also have Wolves and Jackals in my port, which is more action-oriented. My novel in progress, Changeling, is a dark, dystopian fantasy. I've gotten some decent reviews on them, so I hope you enjoy them!
mr.pennybottomwinkle writes: does anyone know of published dystopian literature, that has a male lead?
Can anyone answer this question?
