Not a NaNo'er?
I really admire those who try to write a novel in a month! But it's just not for me. What to do instead? Try a new contest.
There are some really fun daily contests on the site and if you're a little nervous about jumping in and writing some flash fiction, this is a great time to give it a try. The contests on the site quiet down while some of the regular entrants are busy with their novel attempts, so why not take advantage and explore some new contests? If you've never tried flash fiction, jot down a little story and see what you can do. Never tried poetry? Try writing something freestyle or explore a form you've always wanted to try.
While flash fiction is short, you still need the basic elements of a story. Plot, theme and good grammar are still necessary. Aesop's Fables was one of the first examples of flash fiction. There is also a Micro Award given to the best published flash fiction from the previous year. So give flash fiction a try, see if something you come up with is worth submitting to a publication. There are many ezines publishing these short stories, checking a website like Duotrope.com can give you an idea about where to submit.
While you might not have 50,000 words to write in November, try 500.

A new prompt will be posted every day in the forum at the bottom of this page at approximately midnight WDC time. (Eastern US time). The prompt will have the date of the next day, the day it is due. After the prompt is posted,you'll have about 24 hours to post your entry. 300 words or less.

CheerFairy Dutchessbarbie.  : In answer to this month's question, actually the last contest I was in WDC Birthday Bash Blog Relay gave me an idea for another type of Relay that I am planning on doing. It will be called The Round Robin Blog Relay. I am still trying to put it together with the help of my SAJ mentor Pat. So I will only share the jest of it here.
1) There will be teams.
2) Each day a prompt will be given
3) Each member of the team writes using the prompt.
Here is what makes it a round robin: Let say your team contain you, me and Pat. -- The prompt for day 1 is: My Favorite Halloween Pet - you would start with a blog using the prompt -- Then I would add to what you wrote -- Then Pat would take what we both wrote finish it. -- Then we post it as a team. -- The next day I would start and it would end with you. -- I am hoping to have it up and running next month with it ending on Halloween. This will be my first contest that I will have put together so any suggestions will be most welcome.
Comment for last month's subject of Time:
JACE  : Time--such a simple and yet comlex concept. Thanks for this excellent and important reminder, Leger. Oh, and two things--the official WDC Time clock is located at the bottom of the left column, and all three locations (and any others that exist) only state the time that you opened that page; they don't refresh automatically in case one is worried about meetinig a specific deadline. I use the F5 key in Internet Explorer to refresh my screen to be sure of the correct time.
