In Times of Pain

All over, right now, we are getting reports of natural disasters. Earthquakes, floods, fires, tornadoes - of pain, suffering, and loss that the nations of the World are currently having to deal with. Even without the natural disasters, life in general simply throws everything our way, trying to shake us from our faith, make us doubt, make us fear, and make us stray from love.

For me, it is hard to watch people suffer. To hear news of my friends worried over their family overseas, or even worried over their own safety as a wildfire comes within two miles of their own house and they can see the smoke and ash blotting out the sun, the glow of the still burning flames on the horizon after the sun sets that day. To hear of entire portions of cities looking as if they'd been blown apart by a bomb as the result of the destruction of a tornado - houses reduced to sticks, rock, and twisted pieces of metal. To hear of the death of one of my friend's children, only just months after he was born, because they simply could not keep his heart beating properly. To experience the death of one of my own children, and watch the reaction of my family members and my friends.

Sometimes it is hard to sit and ask "Why?" only to get the answer that now isn't the time to know, and for us to realize that truly, we may never know. We do have a place we can turn to, however, to seek some guidance, and some comfort, even if answers are still pending. Even when we doubt, even when we don't understand, and even when we are suffering ourselves. Whether the suffering and pain should come from natural disasters, or simply life in general. Whether the pain is simply witnessed, or whether we share it more deeply than people realize.

Job was tempted sorely by Satan. He faced loss after loss and pain after pain as Satan desperately tried to dislodge his faith. His story is one that makes me wince, knowing the pain he had to suffer and the trials he went through. But his story is also warming - despite it all, he kept his faith. Despite it all, he knew that God still loved him and had not forsaken him.

"But it is still my consolation, And I rejoice in unsparing pain, That I have not denied the words of the Holy One." Job 6:10

------------------

There are other verses, as well, that may bring some comfort.

"Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also." John 14: 1-3

There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him; they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. And ther will no longer be any night; adn they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever. Revelation 22:3-5

"But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall. You will tread down the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day which I am preparing," says the Lord of hosts. Malachi 4:2

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, adn with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Take comfort in knowing that God knows your pain, and feels your pain. Take comfort in knowing that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) Even when it hurts. Even when we don't understand. Even when we will never understand. God is with us.
