NaNoWriMo or National Novel Writing Month

What is NaNoWriMo? For those of you who may not know, November is National Novel Writing Month! During this month, tens of thousands of writers all over the world attempt to write 50,000 words in 30 days! Visit https://www.nanowrimo.org for all the details!

I'm not participating this year, but I have three times in the past. I'd like to share some things I've learned along the way!

*Bullet* If you're a goal-oriented person like me, having a calendar with each day's word count goals will help a great deal. Each day, calculate how many words you have left to go, and compute an average of how much you'd have to write per day to finish on time (or early if you'd like). You can also create a spreadsheet to automatically calculate these numbers!

*Bullet* Write extra whenever possible! There will most likely be days where you don't have much time or the words just won't come to you. Take advantage of the good times and write extra! Then you won't feel as guilty on those bad days.

*Bullet* Use online communities for support! Writing.Com has a NaNo lounge where you can talk, chat, rant, rave with others! (The NaNoWriMo site also has forums - be sure to mention you're from Writing.Com there!) But don't get too distracted from your task!

*Bullet* Find a NaNo buddy to keep you motivated and for some friendly competition! Or find a non-NaNo-er who can cheer you on!

Most importantly, I think the trick to "winning" NaNo is knowing yourself. If you know you write better in the morning hours, try to get your words written then. If schedules work for you, go with them!

Embrace the insanity! Writing 50,000 words may seem like a lot, but it's also very fun! Don't worry too much and enjoy the ride!
