What is a mystery? It's like a puzzle. A reader has to discover the secret or riddle in order to solve it and find out who the criminal or enemy is. Clues are imperative, but should be puzzling. Make a reader have to think by using a strong plot that paints a picture in the reader's mind, yet leaves them guessing. 
 What is your idea of a good mystery? Is it a cozy mystery with less action, a hard-boiled detective mystery, an amateur detective mystery, or one not mentioned here? |

This weeks newsletter will focus on dialog, which is conversation with drama. Whether a mystery or any other story, there is nothing worse than a boring dialog. Skipping past the dull parts and plunging into what makes the exchange different and significant is essential. If the dialog does not make the story move forward, fit the theme, or give good character and setting definition, then I suggest it be reconsidered, and in most cases deleted.
Other things to be kept in mind are over using words like "oh", "well", "hello", "goodbye", or any other ordinary fillers. Use only detailed information you wish to impart with the reader. One of the things that bore most readers is when a writer uses names in the dialog too frequently. For example:
"Leave me out of this, Simon"
"Only if you promise you won't tell anyone, Denise."
"I won't make any promises, Simon"
"Then I'll make everyone think you helped kill him, Denise."
Redundant is not the word for this type of dialog. Most readers consider it boring and the work of an undeveloped writer. Whether a name, place, or otherwise, never use words too closely together if avoidable.
