Guest Judging

Utilizing guest judges in a contest or activity has many benefits. It can help revive a contest, provide fresh perspective, and ease the judging process. Here are a few tips to remember when using a guest judge:

Seeking:

*Bullet* Post a message in your forum that you're seeking guest judges, or try emailing friends or those you think might be interested.

*Bullet* Be specific and detailed. Let interested judges know what they're getting into. A few ideas:

*Note1* Typical number of entries
*Note1* Judging criteria
*Note1* Deadline for judging

Judging:

*Bullet* Have a plan! Be prepared to calculate scores and judge's top choices to choose your contest's winners. Assigning points and averaging those points is a common method.

*Bullet* Communication is key! Be prepared to answer questions and have an open dialogue with your fellow judges. Using email or a judges' eyes only forum can help greatly.

After Judging:

*Bullet* Will you reward your guest judges? It's optional, but you can give a prize to guest judges, perhaps gps, reviews, sigs, etc. It's up to you.

Having a guest judge can help the host as well as the guests. It can give someone a taste for what it's like to run a contest, and it can bring members of Writing.Com together. *Smile*

Always keep on writing!

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter gave step-by-step instructions on Entering a Contest. *Smile*

Wonderful newsletter Spidey. Thank you for the information on entering contests. I have entered some contests and have messed up some. But I am learning so thanks for the help. ~ Elaine's Beary Limited*~ Author Icon

You're very welcome, and thanks for the feedback! In many cases, practice makes perfect, right? Keep entering those contests! *Bigsmile*

Thanks for another good read, Spidey, and for highlighting the History Contest.
What inspires you more to enter a contest? Is it the prompt or the prize?
erm, I feel a bit bad saying neither, but for me it's about competing against my peers, honing my writing skills and gaining feedback and exposure. My favourite contest has always been Mavis Moog Author Icon's Great Short Story Contest, because her reviews are so useful, and the competition is fierce. It's also a great place to find good quality reading material posted by others.

Thanks for the feedback! I think friendly competition can be a great motivational tool, and helpful reviews from a judge can be a great prize!

Question to think about: Have you ever been a guest judge? Would you consider being one?
