 Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter! Our goal is to showcase some of our newest Writing.Com Authors and their items. From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com.
We hope all members of the site will take the time to read, rate, review and welcome our new authors. By introducing ourselves, reviewing items and reaching out, we will not only make them feel at home within our community, we just might make new friends!

Recycle Your Writing
Do you have stacks of notebooks with unfinished stories, a poem here and there, or ideas written down you never pursued? If you do, you might want to consider recycling them.
 Recycle writing? Yes. Get those old stories out and reuse them!

Re-cycle
Get those creative juices flowing and bring new life to old writing. If you feel stuck, try to combine two or more of your pieces into one. Weave your stories together, allowing more layers within one story. You might be surprised what you come up with. And it's fun to watch your characters meet each other and see how they react. They might be a bit grouchy, however, after being ignored for such a long time. Give them a chance to stretch and get some fresh air. Then let them tell your story.
You can also recycle old articles you have written by updating facts, rewording, adding and/or combining information you had not included previously. The framework is already there. Just rearrange and renew!
Have you collected research in the past, taken tons of notes, and never did anything more with it? Do it now. You don't need to use every single fact you have written down. Get the highlighter out and mark the things you'd like to include. Start small; write a summary. Be sure to sequence your facts by making a list before you begin. Don't waste all that hard work only to collect dust. Get that polish out and make your work shine. Renew those exciting ideas you once had!

Excerpt: First, online publishing gives more people than ever a chance for their voice to be heard. In the past, a person would have to be a trained writer with a good editor in order to be published. Even those who considered themselves professional writers could have a hard time getting their material published in print. However, the Internet allows for publishing without the need to print the writing.
Excerpt: In the Pit, females such as Bella were a rare sight. Even in the wastes, women were hoarded and defiled and claimed as prizes. But she belonged to no one. To the guys, she was just another sweating, spitting brute with a give-'em-hell-and-let-'em-rest-in-pieces attitude. She belched and she swore, she wasn't afraid to break a man's nose, and never failed to drink her male counterparts under the table. But the boys knew when to tread lightly. They knew how deadly her aim was, or what she could do with a blade. They knew the pain she could give to a person who was still alive, and the pleasure she derived from such pastimes.
Excerpt: A young man peered from behind the partially opened door, a lip-licking smile appearing along his equally pale skin as a red glow flickered behind him. A deep, dark, partially relieved voice rang among the enclosed walls, "I thought they scared you away, Sylvia."

Excerpt: There is nothing more frightening than knowing something is wrong with you, but not knowing what the problem is. I had been told countless different explanations, and had gotten opinions from numerous doctors and neurologists, but none of them were really sure what the problem was. It had began back when I was eleven years old, and at first, I thought it was completely normal to have throbbing headaches every now and then. I thought is was just a regular headache. I had ignored them at first, but after a while, my headaches started to escalate into an everyday problem.
Excerpt: The fog evaporated, as he observed the creek, presenting a bridge extending across to the other side. He walked cautiously over it, moving closer to the wooden object. It had been rumored that the object, known as the Harp, was once made by an old wizard who wanted to make a device for traveling through time. Some had said that the legend was true because the wizard had mysteriously vanished from the area. It was the Harp that kept the legend alive because it was the only thing left behind in the forest.

I'm not technically a "newbie" anymore, but I still like to get these newsletters. I always learn things from them I didn't know before; for example, ASAs from this letter. I'm so glad we have committed Mods like Cubby and esprit who are willing to help newer members get used to the water!

~ We often hear this concern from newbies.  There are a few different ways to get your work noticed that you probably are not aware of yet. Things to Do and Read can be found to the left of your screen under "Site Navigation". After opening that, scan down to Request Reviews and click. Here is the actual link: "Please Review" . Another place to check out is "Find a Review Forum" and also "The Shameless "Plug" Page" . You shouldn't have any trouble getting a review after submitting to any of these places. Good luck!

The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch
I listened to this on audiobook and absolutely loved it! It's sort of a coming-of-age type story about a 13 year-old boy who loves checking out the ocean life in the middle of the night. What he discovers makes him sought out by the media, among other groups, and thought of as a prophet by some. At the same time, his parents are separating, the neighbor girl is weirded out, and the old lady he checks up on keeps falling. His best friend is having major hormone activity, and nobody takes the main character seriously because he is short for his age. It's a great book! And because he is a Rachel Carson fan, I had to order books on her to learn about this fascinating woman. I've not only picked up new knowledge about her, but also have grown an interest in ocean life, all thanks to this first novel! Highly recommended.
