About This Newsletter

** Image ID #1467886 Unavailable **

What is a mystery? It's like a puzzle. A reader has to discover the secret or riddle in order to solve it and find out who the criminal or enemy is. Clues are imperative, but should be puzzling. Make a reader have to think by using a strong plot that paints a picture in the reader's mind, yet leaves them guessing.*Smile*

*Star* What is your idea of a good mystery? Is it a cozy mystery with less action, a hard-boiled detective mystery, an amateur detective mystery, or one not mentioned here?

Letter from the editor

*Star* This week's newsletter centers on the key points in writing a good mystery. One the key points include sexual and gender integration. For example, if a great exemplar is not used and well defined, the story is going to lack what it takes to hold a reader's interest. Agatha Christie knew this and preceded Ellery Queen and John Dickson Carr in genre by using cultural background, and created a market for their works for readers, publishers, and critics.

The history where the tale takes place is another important factor, as is realism, and the puzzling character/characters and storyline. A good mystery revolves around all of these things. The plot, imagery of people and places, and the leading up to the puzzle should be written so well that a reader is drawn to the tale from the beginning to end of it. For example, if your story is about a mysterious old house, then center the events about it and why it is puzzling. Did it have a previous owner who wanted vengeance of some kind? If so, then slowly draw a reader in with the puzzle. Never give away too much too soon. Also make the characters and events just as mysterious as the dwelling.
These are just a few of the tips that make for a great mystery.

**If you have a good mystery you would like read, post it here or email me. I just love a good mystery! *Delight* **

Dear Sherri,
This is my first edition of the Mystery newsletter, and already I'm so pleased I finally ticked the box to start receiving it! Not knowing where to start has been a real deterrent, but your positive 'can-do' attitude is just what I needed to hear.
Thanks for a smashing newsletter! Acme Author IconMail Icon

Thank you so much. I'm glad the positivity was spread.

You totally underestimate your gift. Even a published author like me with a degree in criminology has a hard time doing mysteries. DB Cooper Author IconMail Icon

Thank you for the compliment. *Smile* You're right. A good mystery is not the easiest to write, but I am a firm believer that anyone can do it. *Wink*
