Contest Enry Genre
In case you missed the recent announcement, the Contest Entry is now a WDC genre! (As well as 5 others, see "[NOTICE] Six New Genres!" for more details!) When creating your contest entries, please use the new Contest Entry genre (and reserve the Contest genre for contests).
So, I'd like to discuss contest entries this week. When writing a contest entry, keep a few things in mind.
Length
Some contests require a minimum or maximum length. Be sure your entry follows the rules, and if required, don't forget a word count! Writing.Com has a handy tool to calculate it for you (no manual counting needed here). To use this tool, look for the black bar under your item's title. Along here you'll find options such as Edit, Delete, etc. Click on Count to find your word count!
The Word Count tool will also tell you the number of lines used (handy for poetry entries with line requirements).
Spelling
Check and re-check your spelling! Whether listed as a criteria for judging or not, poor spelling will most likely stand out to a judge in a negative way. Remember where you found the Word Count Tool? Well, to its left in that black bar below your title, you'll find Spell which will run the site's spell check!
It's always wise to look over your entry before submitting. Sometimes your eyes can miss errors on a computer screen, so it may be best to print your entry out on paper. Reading aloud may also help, too.
Rating
Always be sure to rate your items properly, contest entries and all other items. Be sure your contest entry follows any rating guidelines for the specific contest you are entering.
For more info on Writing.Com's rating system, see "Content Rating System (CRS)" [13+]
Prompts
Some contests have prompts, while others don't. Always check whether a prompt is used and be sure your entry follows any given prompt. If you're not sure, email the host or judge. It's better to be sure ahead of time than be disqualified for not following a given prompt!
When in doubt about any rules or guidelines, don't be afraid to email the host or judge! I'm sure they would prefer answering a few questions to getting an entry that may be disqualified!

My last newsletter gave information on In & Outs.
Hey there, Spidey Thanks for highlighting the History Contest, and thank you too for an insightful "how to..." on In & Outs. Newbie or Oldie can benefit from exploring site options which are new to them. Smashing Newsletter ~ Acme
Thanks! I appreciate the support!
I'd like to leave you all with a question. I'm predicting more entries into contests for the near future as members try out the new Contest Entry genre. Are you planning on writing something new for a contest to use the new genre? If you're a contest host, are you seeing an increase in entries?
