As you know by know, Writing.Com is a huge site filled with a never-ending list of places to visit and things to do. Everywhere you turn, there are interesting members with something to say. Most all of us can find at least a member or two with similar interests or goals. That brings me to the topic of this week's newsletter: Groups!
I'm not going to admit how many groups I'm in right now (hey I think I even have one or two with me as the only member), but it is quite numerous. Read on for some of the purposes groups have served, and how to get the most of of them.
Groups and Charity
One of the most common uses for groups is charity. Members band together to raise funds to provide upgrades and send awardicons. Or to extend a specific individual's premium membership. Recently, I've seen more and more groups dedicated to real-life charity. I think these charity groups (of all sorts) truly show the heart of Writing.Com. I've been impressed by the community aspect of this site and charity groups are one of the cornerstones of this.
Groups and Communication
Other groups focus on a social connection, or function as a mailing list, there for communication. In addition to the wonderful variety of official newsletters available through the site, there are individuals out there who have created their own on various topics. The easiest way I have seen this work is via a group: the newsletter host creates a group, subscribers are added as members, and a group email is sent to everyone involved.
Other groups are created for people with similar interests. (Hey, there is even a group for members named Sara/h: "Invalid Item" .)
Groups and Contests
Groups and contests can also go hand-in-hand. Here are a few ways this can happen:
Contests with entry fees can add members to a group as the fees are received. This helps the host keep track of who has paid. ... Or perhaps the contest has many rounds, with only certain members moving on to future. A group can be a practical way to keep track of who is involved, and who is still active. (For this, it may be helpful to use the "Group Level" feature, one level for members still going on in the contest, another for members who have been eliminated...) ... Group judges often do well as having a separate group to themselves. This helps as group-only email and forums can be set up.
Questions About Groups
If you have any questions about the set-up of groups or using any features you have seen around the site or heard mentioned here, feel free to submit a question below. Also, take a peek at some of the "Editor's Picks" as I have linked some how-tos.
The list here is far from being extensive. I've seen many more uses for groups... and with a site filled with creative people, I'm sure I will continue to see unique uses as time move on. |
