Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter! In this Newsletter, I will be showcasing the work of some of our newer members. We'll also have a look at reviewing. We'll analyse the benefits of reviewing, why your feedback matters and I'll offer some hopefully handy tips.

Letter from the editor

When you’ve posted your first item(s) and are starting to receive feedback, the natural progression is to want to offer feedback on other authors’ work. Reviewing is a wonderful writing exercise. Not only will you be making another member very happy, and helping them learn and grow as a writer, you’re also helping yourself. By analysing another author’s work, you will soon pick up on what works and what doesn’t, and this is helpful when writing future pieces. Additionally, by reviewing you start moving around the site and you’ll get to know other members. This will make you feel more involved and is a great way of receiving more reviews in return.

If you are new to reviewing and unsure whether or not you will be able to offer helpful feedback, rest assured that your thoughts matter. You are a reader. Whatever views you have on the piece, it’s handy for an author to know how you feel about their work. Without feedback a writer doesn’t know whether or not they are reaching their target audience, and whether or not the effect they had in mind is getting across to others.

Remember to always be honest in your feedback, as well as helpful and encouraging. Treat other authors with the same respect you would like to be treated with. It’s helpful to ask yourself what you would want to know if you had written the item, and what would have been helpful to you.

If you’re unsure what a review should look like, you could have a look at the Public Reviews page. You can find this by going to your Site Navigation menu – Item Jumps – Public Reviews. You’ll find there the many reviews other reviewers made public.

You’ll notice straight away that the layout and size of the reviews depends on the individual reviewer. Once you start submitting your own reviews, you will soon develop your very own style.

There are a few things to keep in mind:

*Star* A bit of WritingML can aid the clarity of a review, but it’s not wise to use too much. The Christmas Tree look might be great for the Holiday season, but if your review starts looking that bright, it’s probably a good idea to tone it down a little.

You can find out more about WritingML by going to your Site Navigation Menu – Site Tools – WritingML help.

*Star* Only use one signature per review. Though they may look nice, the purpose of a review is to offer feedback to another author, not to promote activities and events you might be involved in.

Your ML and links should not outweigh the content of your review, nor should they be used to reach the 250 character minimum to get onto the review page.

*Star* Reviewing should be fun! If you’re not enjoying giving a review on a certain item, it might be best to move on and review one you will enjoy giving feedback on.

~~~
Don't be afraid to review. It's fun and a wonderful way to help and interact with other members. *Smile*
