What I Did on My Summer Vacation
Remember back when you were in school and your friends (or maybe even your teacher) would ask you to share what you did over your summer vacation? Or maybe your teacher asked you to write an essay about it? Or have I just aged myself?!? Well then, let me tell you a story ... back in the dark ages when I was in elementary/primary school, teachers would often ask students to speak or write about what they did over their summer vacations!
Sometimes the stories shared by my fellow classmates were pretty boring or very tame ("we went to my grandparents house and went to the library a lot," or "we went to the beach and swam in the ocean and got sunburned") -- but other times the stories were quite funny. Because, as some of you already know too well, things sometimes don't go as planned on vacations. There can be unexpected travel problems, unwelcomed introductions to poison ivy, or getting a little to close to nature by meeting up with a bear. But if you are lucky and things sort themselves out as they usually do, you end up with a good story to tell and shared laughs with the rest of your family for years to come.
At least that's the case in my family. I live a couple of thousand miles away from the rest of my family so we don't see each other often, but when we do all get together, my siblings and I will eventually start reminiscing about the summer vacations we took as children. With each telling, the story gets longer, with more details added (and we don't always agree on the details), but that just makes it all the more fun!
For instance, none of us will ever forget the summer we were tent camping in the Grand Tetons National Park when I was about six years old. Early one morning before any of us had gotten out of our sleeping bags inside the family tent, we heard an animal outside rummaging near our campfire, knocking over the coffee pot and snuffling around a couple of pans we'd left out. The ranger had told us the day before that there were bears in the area, and to make sure our food was safely locked in our car, which it was, but we'd left a couple of clean pts and pans near the campfire, and we were now convinced that a bear must be out there nosing around.
My sister and I started to cry, egged on by our older brother telling us he was sure it was a bear because he'd seen it through the tent flap, and my parents were trying to calm us down by comforting us and telling my brother to hush, while at the same time wondering if their precious family was about to be eaten by a grizzly. The "bear" was atracted by the noises coming from our tent, and came over to investigate, sniffling along the bottom and leaning his substantial weight against the side of the canvas where I was now huddled. I let out a scream, which startled the "bear" and caused him to make a low rumbling sound.
My father by this time was armed with a flashlight and ready to leave the tent to defend his family. At the sound of the growl, my father's resolve deepened (as did his certainty that he was about to face his death) and he unzipped the tent flap and stepped outside. After he shouted out his attempt to frighten the "bear" away, the next sound we heard was a kind of "oomph" from my father as he was obviously knocked to the ground in preparation for being devoured. My mother was on his heels, armed with another flashlight, and when she stepped outside we heard her shriek, and then we heard her laugh. It started as a giggle, and then turned into a full, deep belly laugh.
My sister and brother and I, clinging to each other in the middle of the tent, wondered why our sweet dear mother was laughing as our father was being eaten by a bear. Being the oldest, my brother decided to investigate and as he peeked through the tent flap, he soon joining my mother in laughter. My sister and I crowded around him to see my father, on his back on the ground, being "mauled" by a large white dog trying to lick his face off.
It seems the ranger's dog had gotten away from the ranger station earlier that morning, and was out checking out the campsites looking for a handout, when he stumbled upon our camp and a frying pan that hadn't been totally cleaned of every molecule of residual bacon grease. In his fervor to lick it clean before being caught by the ranger, he had accidentally knocked over the coffee pot, which is what woke us up and set our imaginations running wild about the bear outside our tent. One of my favorite pictures from that trip is me standing next to our tent, hugging and laughing at the big white dog (who was as big as I was). And when I returned to school in the Fall, I had a great story to share about how we were almost attacked by a bear while we were camping!
I bet the rest of you have a story or twenty you could write about funny things that happened on vacations from your past. Talk about a list of endless possibilities! So next time you have a little writer's block going on, try breaking it by writing about "what happened on my summer vacation." And I hope you have as much fun remembering as I just did!

As a guest editor, I don't have any recent comments, but here are some responses from a newsletter I did several months ago about poking fun at oneself!
From dogfreek21
I love poking fun at myself. I find it's not only easy to find something to make fun of, but I never have to worry about hurting someone else's feelings.
Very true! As long as we don't go overboard poking fun at ourselves, I think it helps give us a lot of perspective as well.
From Breezy-E ~ In College
I've got a good true story I'm writing up for school that will probably find it's way here for a contest I saw, all about how I flew from Europe to the USA to check out a college and lost my passport. And treated the whole thing as a joke.
Breezy-E
Yikes! That sounds scary, and stressful! Glad you were able to find the humor it it.

Thanks so much to Sophy for featuring my work in this weeks newsletter. The response has been overwhelming!
Not only was "Invalid Item" widely read and reviewed, I had several port raids and many other works read.
I had no idea the response would be so huge.
I haven't even had a chance to read my other newsletters yet!
Thank you Sophy and thank you all for visiting my port!
Great to hear that -- glad you got such a great response. Thanks for sharing!
Until next time ...... Keep Laughing! |
