cNotes
Community Notes, otherwise known as cNotes are one of the wonderful items offered here at Writing.com. I’ve seen cNotes for every occasion imaginable. They are a terrific way to let people know you care and are thinking of them. Who doesn’t like to receive a special note from a friend? I know they always make me smile.
Anyone on the site can send a cNote, as long as you have the required amount of gift points and the user name of the person who is to receive the cNote. The user name can be found at the top of the person’s portfolio or it is the information before “@writing.com” when you send an email. Simply find the cNote you wish to send, then type in the user name, type in any personal message you wish to include, decide whether or not you want to send it anonymously and if you want to include gift points with it. Once you’ve completed those options you will see a conformation screen where you can verify the information before you hit send.
What about making cNotes? To make cNotes you must have an upgraded membership because they require the use of images which only upgraded members are allowed to place in their portfolio. Below you will find detailed information on how to create your own cNotes. Click on the Writing tab at the top of the page then scroll down to Writing: Interactive and you will select Community Notes.
Basic Item Information
Title: give the cNotes an appropriate title
Folder: pick where you want the item to be located in your portfolio
Brief Description: you have 90 characters to entice someone to open your cNotes
Intro Rating: rate your brief description
Content and Access Control Settings
Content Rating: rate the content of your cNotes
Access Restrictions: decide who you want to see the cNotes
Passkey: fill this in if you want a passkey on the item (explanatory link provided)
Group Edit Access and Edit Level: decide if you want a group to have editing access
Genres and Keywords
Genres: pick the appropriate genres
Keywords: list any relevant keywords for the search engine (i.e. thank you, contratulations, hello, cheer, birthday, etc.)
Item Body
Item Body: This is where you list information about your cNotes. You should list where the images came from, whether you created them yourself or used something from a friend or off the internet. If you plan on donating any of the proceeds to a group, it’s nice to list the group here as well.
Item Type Specific Settings
Recipients Per Mailing: Choose between 1 and 5 – this is the number of people that can be sent the same cNotes at one time
Charge Per: Choose between “Charge Per Mailed Group” or “Charge Per Individual Recipient”
Item Preferences
Rating/Reviewing Preference: decide whether you want the item ratable or not
Auto Reward Gift Points: fill this in if you want to reward reviewers automatically
Copyright Information and Store Item
Save options: you can choose save, save and edit or save and view.
Now you are ready to load the cNotes. The first thing you must do is create the images in your port if you haven’t already done so. You handle it the same way you upload any image. Please, please make sure that the images are not copyrighted images (many images off the web are copyrighted, so be very careful when using images from the internet.). You must keep track of the seven digit item number, as you will need it to load cNote.
Next, open up the cNote item you just created. You will notice that it simply has the information you typed into the item body. You must click on “manage” which is located above the item body. This will open up a new window with several options. You want to click on “Add a New cNote” in the red lettering. This will open the area to load your cNote. It asks you a few questions:
cNote Subject
This is what the recipient will see in their email inbox subject line (i.e. Happy Birthday, Have a Nice Day, etc. These do not have to be unique names, you can have several called Happy Birthday.)
Image Item ID
This is where you type in the seven digit number of your image.
cNote Body
In this section you can type in any sort of message that will be sent with every cNote. You can also leave this section blank.
Gift Point Price
Decide how much you wish to charge for your cNote – keeping in mind that the system adds 250 gift points to the cost. When a cNote is sent, you will receive the amount of gift points you list in this box.
Store This cNote
When everything is the way you want it, click here and your cNote will be added. You can have up to ten individual notes in each cNote item you create. Repeat these steps until all of your cNotes are added. Then you can “View Item” and you will now see your cNotes.
One more useful feature to explore is the “log” section. You can access it by “log” or under the “manage” section you will find “View Sent Log.” This section tells you when a cNote was sent, who sent it (it might say anonymous if it was sent that way) and which cNote was sent, who it was sent to, and your fee. At the bottom of the list you will find “Total Fees Collected.” When a cNote is sent, you do not receive a notification, the gift points simply are added to your account (viewable under “My Gift Points”). It would become overly cumbersome to receive a notification each time one is sent.
The log can be very useful to you if you wish to donate all or a portion of your profits to a charity. The best way to handle this situation is on the first or last day of each week or month, go to your log and check the total gift points collected. Send that amount, or a portion of it, to the group you are supporting. Then, once you have transferred the gift points to the group, click on the “Purge cNote Log & Reset 'Sent Counts'.” Please do not send gift points to groups on a by item basis or a daily basis as this floods the gift point log of the group you are supporting.
That’s it for setting up cNotes and managing them. Now, go out there and make some yourself, or have fun sending out something from the Editor’s Picks below.
I hope you’ve found this issue helpful!
