"If you host a contest or activity that garners even light support on a regular basis, consider an exit strategy. If you leave without making arrangements for that activity to continue, it will be lost to members. While it is possible that another member might re-create that activity from scratch, it's harder to do." ~ JACE in "A Member Leaves ... an Opening" |

Life's Rollercoaster
When it comes to finding a variety of writing contests and activities all in one place, our beloved site right here, Writing.Com is THE PLACE TO BE!
There are virtually no limits to the creativity that is put into these contests. Every genre, style, story, poetry, even novel writing has a gathering place here. Not all are active all of the time. After all, these contests are hosted, run, administered, and often financed by one member or a group of members.
One thing is certain, offering any kind of activity to others demands the investment of time. It can be a wonderful and enriching experience to see what others come up with for a prompt or a writing idea. Mutual reviews and discussions enrich vocabularies and horizons.
What happens though when life happens? In clear terms: what happens to any member run activity when the original owner doesn't have the time, funds, or muse to dedicate to it any longer? Worst case scenario: it gets deleted from the site. This is truly the saddest and relatively easily avoidable outcome.
Some ideas to safeguard a contest/activity:
Create a group to administer the forum and give at least one other trusted person admin rights.
Ask if someone is willing to hold the item safely in their portfolio if you can't afford the necessary membership level any longer. Here is how to do give an item to another member: "Transfer an Item To Another Member"
Ask if someone is willing to take on the task of owning and running the forum / group / contest / activity.
One famous example of an activity that has stayed an annual mainstay of the site is "The Quills" . Founded in 2008, it has had at least four owners (that I know of).
Another example is "Anniversary Reviews" that I started in 2009, but gave to Sum1 for several years, and only took back to run a little over a year ago. This forum wouldn't exist any longer if Sum1 hadn't taken it and the amazing "Anniversary Reviews Team" wouldn't help out with it.
In a nutshell: if you can't keep something going here on the site, ask for help. There is always someone who can at bare minimum keep the item safely tucked away in their portfolio. Many times, the activity will find a whole new life and meaning for the community at large with the infusion of new ideas from a fresh host.
What can you do to ensure the continuation of something you worked hard to build up? |

Replies to my last Contests & Activities Newsletter "Go Ahead, Touch it!" that asked How many plants can you grow at the same time?

One of my Quill-nominated poems was a result of "Muffy's Mischievous Challenges" and yeah... I probably wouldn't have written anything if it weren't for any of these challenges really.
Challenges are such a great way to get us going in writing more, and sometimes, better.

My mom achieved to grow several avocado trees from seeds. Sadly, they never gave any fruits as they were confined to flowerpots on a windowsill in cold, cold, cold Berlin, Germany. You might have some good harvests in years to come! |
