About This Newsletter

"The most difficult and complicated part of the writing process is the beginning."
~ A. B. Yehoshua

"In the writing process, the more a story cooks, the better."
~ Doris Lessing

"For me, the writing process is the same as the reading process. I want to know what happens next."
~ Neal Asher

"My writing process is chaos. I usually start with an overarching theme. Then I establish several story threads, but I don't outline. I just start writing and keep notes for what may come. It's an organic process that's usually pretty flexible.
~ Lisa Lutz

Letter from the editor

Writing is a learning process. It helps us realize what we already know about a topic and what we think. It inspires ideas, makes connections, and prompts questions.

The quiet solitude of the writing process allows us to discover and learn in a uniquely creative way. Writing is not a linear, step-by-step process but a messy adventure that we can control and that often surprises us at the same time.

I would venture to say that no one marches neatly through the process in a set sequence. Writing involves several overlapping and recurring activities.

*CoffeeToGo* Planning:
This involves critical thinking and reading, determining purpose, audience (readers), and voice. This is where "pre-writing" happens: deciding on a topic, playing with ideas, and establishing a focus.

*CoffeeToGo* Revising and Editing:
At this stage, we work on style and edit for clarity, coherence, and unity. There is a lot of proofreading and editing going on. And let me tell you, you will return to this stage more than once until you are truly satisfied with your story.

*CoffeeToGo* Reading and Feedback:
As you read through your own work, you will find things that need tweaking. However, when others read and review our stories, they often find things that we've overlooked. As we get more and more familiar with our story, it can be easy for us to take things for granted while an outsider finds plot holes and things that need more clarification.

Every step of the writing process is a treasure and very necessary in getting us to a polished piece.

Ask & Answer

Thank you for the following comment received from my
last For Authors newsletter, "InspirationOpen in new Window.:

"Go to a coffee shop or diner and people-watch or eavesdrop. Pay attention to mannerisms, how folks dress, body language, etc." This is excellent advice. A story came to me from an actual experience while on a walk. The icing on the cake (or donut) is that I later sold the story to a Business Journal needing a filler above an article about a new coffee shop.

One of my stories - "Stare-masterOpen in new Window. - shows exactly what happens, or rather, what I observed many years ago while sipping coffee and eating donuts (with sprinkles) in a coffee shop.

Hey, that's awesome!! Congratulations!
By the way, I cave just as quickly when an invitation to "coffee and donuts" is offered!
