About This Newsletter

Hello. I joined WDC in September of 2006. My name is Carol St.Ann, and and I write for this newsletter once a month. This year, 2025, I plan to focus on the craft with a hard focus toward publication. Please feel free to hit me up with any issues you’d like to see addressed, and I’ll do my best to research it for you.

Letter from the editor

So. Now you’ve gone through publishing your book. How do you sell it?

Your best friend here is social media. Yep. That’s right: X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and don’t make the mistake of avoiding LinkedIn.

Start with your personal Author introduction and lead into your book Elevator Pitch.

Have you ever written one?
If not, start practicing today.

The premise here is that you've gotten on the elevator with a prospective reader/buyer, and you have the time it takes to ride between the lobby and the 12th floor to hawk your book well enough for him or her to want to buy it. That's about a 25 word pitch, give or take.

You need to cover the main character, protagonist, essential set-up, and character conflicts in the time it takes to travel those 12 floors.

In 25 words or less, write your elevator pitch. My attempts for Behind the Wall developed like this.

First attempt: Comes in at Story Pitch: (S)-66 words/ Relevance Pitch (R)-20 words

STORY PITCH: Behind the Wall is an International Romantic Thriller that takes place in Europe and the US. The Main Character Protagonist is an actor, a philandering cad who's fallen in love. The Antagonist is a narcissistic sociopath who's obsessed with the actor and uses the actor's internet fan groups to get close to him and destroy his life and the lives of everyone who cares about him. (66 words)

RELEVANCE PITCH: There are elements of Internet and real life stalking, identity theft, serial killing, international law, and straight and homosexual romance relationships.(20 words)

I needed to keep at it.

After second, third, and fourth attempts. I'm able to shrink it down to S-36 / S-31 / S-30 / R-21 words.

STORY: Behind the Wall is an international romantic thriller whose protagonist, an aging stage and screen actor, is a philandering cad with a narcissistic obsessed fan who uses social media to destroy him and everyone he loves. (36 words)

STORY: Alternate, sans title: It's an international romantic thriller whose protagonist, an aging stage and screen actor, is a philandering cad with an obsessed fan who uses social media to destroy him and everyone he loves. (31 words)

STORY: It's an international romantic thriller whose protagonist, an aging stage and screen actor, is a philandering cad with an obsessed fan who, once rejected, uses social media to destroy him. (30 words)

RELEVANCE: Elements include: boomers, divorce, custody, family, conspiracy, homophobia, cyber stalking, alcoholism, identity theft, murder, international law, and straight and gay romance.(21 word’s)

This is as crucial to selling your book as any other marketing tool you will use. Process it. Develop it. Craft it until you’ve got it memorized and can write or speak it on the fly at any given moment.

See you next month.
