Horror/Scary Newsletter by Dawn
Music often inspires writing but there are time when stories, including movies (they have scripts) can be inspiration for music. Horror is a genre that can be found in multiple places so today we're going to talk about scary inspired music. |

While I am not the biggest fan of horror, I do love music. Most types, in fact. The type I listen to most is rock, various types and back when I had SiriusXM radio, I listened to Octane. One of the bands they played on a regular basis is one that is heavily influenced by horror. One of the DJ guys for the station is also a huge fan to the point they have created a Con just for horror movies, music and the fans.
The band?
Their name is Ice Nine Kills. They have had some other songs but the recent albums have been heavily influenced by horror movies. One of the albums is called The Silver Screams with the songs having strong inspiration pulled from horror movies. These movies include: Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Halloween and even Jaws. Some of the previous influences were The Silence of the Lambs, Carrie and the Exorcist.
One the best parts is that the band also has a cover song and it is the most perfect cover song to be mixed with all of that horror stuff. They have a cover of Walking on Sunshine. It makes me so happy to have that type of combination even if I don't watch horror. I know exactly how perfect that is despite all of that. They have even done songs inspired by writing. Their song, The People in the Attic song came from Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. The Nature of the Beast had influence from Animal Farm by George Orwell. If you google the band you can probably find a few interviews where they talk about the inspirations. Or there is always the horror conference they are a big part of that includes Jose Mangin, one of the creators. I'm sure it would be fun to attend that event.
It's interesting to see the inspiration go the other way. While I rarely write horror, one thing that I do is get influence from music to write stories. One could use in order to write horror stories. There are some obvious options with soundtracks from horror movies that include the creepy music to set the mood or maybe someone really likes Sweeney Todd and can write a story inspired by one of those songs.
Could even take inspiration from a movie. I don't recommend copying them but something in the movie, maybe a minor detail, can spark inspiration that leads to the creation of a story. Or just the background music. Whatever sparks that idea, go for it. Have fun and scare someone.

Do you know any songs inspired by a horror/scary story?
I haven't written a Horror/Scary newsletter since October 2018. That is a long time but I'm a regular for the fantasy newsletter and write romance or young adult stuff, so it does make a little sense. The previous newsletter topic was about how the villains might seem dead at the end of one movie but then another gets made and the killer is alive again.
Here are a couple comments that my newsletter received from that topic way back in 2018:
Comment by 🌑 Darleen - QoD :
Unfortunately, remakes in horror tend to be corny and it is ridiculous how they always seem to come back no matter what you do. At the same time, I do enjoy some of them simply because I love the characters.
Like Freddy Kreuger. He was my favorite horror character at the young age of 7, so growing up watching him always has held a special place in my heart.
All the sequels, the remake (though no one can replace Robert Englund as the original), along with Jason vs Freddy and even Freddy's Nightmares the series, are kinda bad, but I still watch them over and over because I can't get enough of him. But... I do also enjoy Horror B-Movies so maybe I'm just weird.
Halloween I lost interest in though and watch it merely because it's a "classic". I'll be waiting for the latest film to come out on Kodi before I watch it.
The new generations are taking films of the past, though, and making them their own, so I'm positive there'll be more sequels or remakes in our future and I'm curious how they'll reappear and wreak havoc. Hopefully, Pumpkinhead will make an appearance soon, as well.
Great newsletter and thanks for featuring my short story "Invalid Item" . I always enjoy reading your picks and finding like minded authors. Keep on writing!

Three or more, by the time you pass that, it becomes just blood and more blood.
