Letter from the editor

Along about twenty years ago, my husband (then boyfriend) emailed me a card for Valentine's Day that had cupids shooting arrows which erupted into bloody messes when the target was hit. I was not amused. At. All. I asked about his rationale in sending it. He shrugged and answered, "It is just an overly commercialized Hallmark holiday. Love should be an everyday thing."

While I agreed with the 'everyday' portion of his response, I still felt there was no reason not to have an extra special day once a year. But, rather than have the day go any worse than it was already going, I dropped the subject and went back to preparing his favorite food for dinner.

The next day, I went out and bought a small, but thick, blue notebook. For the next year, every single day I wrote of some thoughtful thing he did, a loving exchange we'd had, a special moment, or smiles we'd shared. I never missed a day. It was a most interesting exercise from my perspective as it forced me to find a positive even on days that had few to offer. I learned something extra special from that alone. Some days I wrote a poem. Some days I wrote paragraphs. Other days merely a few scribbled words. The notebook went from waxing philosophically to utterly real--'You didn't snore last night. Such love in silence.'

A year later, I gave him the little blue notebook on Valentine's Day. He was touched although I could clearly hear his inner brain wondering if he actually now had to read the whole thing!

Has he? Ever read all of it? I doubt it. It IS in his bedside table drawer though. Almost two decades later. Ever since that first Valentine's Day, he's gotten me a sweet card and usually flowers of some kind. Maybe a stuffed animal and we typically go out to dinner. Moreover, he remembered the day when I (GASP) lost track of the date! He's a keeper, for sure!
