I'm pretty sure we all go through periods where we want to write, but can't seem to find anything to write about. Perhaps we lack motivation, desire, or inspiration; maybe we are missing all three! Despite the notebook on my desk that I've written countless ideas in - I can't find the motivation to actually write. None of the ideas I've jotted down inspire me to even try right now.
I decided to do a little digging and gather some ideas on how we can get inspired to write and hopefully, keep writing. I haven't tried all of these yet, but maybe we can make some progress together with these ideas.
Watch TV
Consider watching your favorite show or movie. What about it makes it so appealing to you? Is it the storyline? The characters? Once you start paying attention to what you enjoy watching, perhaps it will inspire you to try some of the techniques too!
Read
Not just any old reading, go back and read some of the favorable reviews you've received. Read through the blog comments you've received. You never know, these kind, encouraging words just might inspire you to try to write something new.
Don't Set Writing Goals
You read that correctly. Sometimes setting goals puts pressure on us to perform and when we fall short, we lose inspiration. Instead, create writing habits. Here is an easy idea for creating a writing habit: Set aside 30 - 60 minutes a day to write. That's it! Easy-peasy. Grab a snack and a beverage, and write something!
Get a Calander
Every day that you complete the 'habit' of writing, put an X on that day. Or better yet, place a sticker on the day! Reward yourself. I know it's a silly little thing, but it works. At the end of the month, you can pat yourself on the back when you see all the gold stars you've accumulated. Good habits will see us to the finish line, not goals.
Ignore the Slump
Think about professional athletes for a moment. When they are in a slump, they don't avoid practice or games, they keep at it. So if you sat at your computer for a writing session and don't feel like you wrote anything worthy, don't skip tomorrow's writing session! Try again! And again!
Tidy up
Is the area where you write cluttered? You might be surprised how a tidy desk can ignite the creative juices flowing again! It can translate to a calm and refreshed state of mind.
If you really have the itch to write, it’ll never go away,
You have two options — get inspired and get to work, or let your anxiety and insecurities grow and fester.
The choice is yours.
