“The reason I do photographs is to help people understand my music, so it’s very important that I am the same emotionally, in the photographs as in the music.” -- Bjork
“I honestly think these days it’s probably considered more masculine to be emotionally connected.” – Henry Cavill.
I hope everyone is having a nice holiday season. It’s that time of year between Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanza and New Year’s. We’re busy, exhausted, full of hope and goodwill, and determined to make or - maybe not - make resolutions. I’m honored once again to have the last Romance/Love Newsletter for the year.
New Year can be an opportunity to find new love, take your romance to next level, or just say “Hey, I need a time out.” But, what Romance and Love have in common with this time of year is hope and goodwill, and that’s what I hope to tap into here.
In this newsletter, I’ll tackle what makes romance emotionally satisfying and how it plays into the dynamics of the season.
Leaving you with a little Christmas goodwill. Enjoy this Christmas Song Crossword: |

When it comes to writing romance, the scenes that resonate the most are emotionally compelling. It starts when your romantic lead characters meet and there’s that spark. The best spark is an emotional spark. One way to show that in your writing is through internal monologue. What does the attraction feel like? An example: He gave her a light kiss on the cheek. Now grow that – how did it feel to her? Heated? Electric? Awareness of something different? What does attraction feel like to him – and her?
Be descriptive in showing their reactions to each other. Use the five senses to describe their reactions. An example: His eyes sparkled with kindness – emotionally speaks to his warm heart, which she finds attractive.
Grow the attraction – external conflict brings a couple together. Use those five senses to describe the heightened emotions. Give the reader the 2+2 but don’t give them the 4. Let the reader draw that conclusion. For example: He stepped backward and smiled. She pursed her lips, as the air cracked around them, wanting to close the gap between them, yet she held back, meeting his gaze. What’s the 4? His confidence? Her awareness of his presence? Both? Neither?
Write in and let me know what you think the 4 is!
Now it’s New Year’s Eve. It’s a night full of traditions. You’re on a date with your significant other or your potential significant other. It’s midnight. The kiss at midnight is an old standard, but it’s one that can be made special by heightening the emotionality of the event. Things to consider: the setting. Are you on top of a building? In a winter garden with heating lamps? In a dance hall? Is it crowded? Festive? Low-key? What does it smells like? What’s a romantic smell? How does that heighten the emotional attraction?
Does New Year’s bring a heighten awareness or appreciation of your significant other? One way you can do that is by sharing a simple, warm-hearted message you place in a card, a box of chocolates, or even next to the champagne bottle.
Share your New Year’s Eve traditions and I’ll put them in my next Romance/Love Newsletter. |
