About This Newsletter

Family unity in an interreligious family is a subject that is dear to me. This is because my siblings and I all practice different religions. My sister and one brother are practicing Christians. My other brother and his family follow the Jewish faith, while I am a Baha'i. This can make for some very interesting family reunions. As a result, I have learned some lessons in dealing with this subject.

Letter from the editor

The first step to maintaining family unity in an interreligious family is love. Remember the words of His Holiness Christ in John 13:34: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” Love is a common theme in all religions, so it is a concept that everyone will understand.

Second, show respect to your family members by respecting their Holy Days, Holy Books, and the founder of their religions. Showing respect for these things does not mean that you believe them. Showing respect to your family members, Holy items, is an act of love for your family members.

Third, when answering a question about your religion or spiritual path, answer to the best of your ability from what you know about your faith, without giving a personal opinion. If you do not know the answer, go to your Holy Book to find it.

Fourth, if your family member invites you to one of their spiritual services. Attempt to go. Your family member is not trying to convert you, they simply want to share their joy with you.

These are some of the things I have learned in dealing with my family. I have also learned that there are many concepts, besides love, that all religions have in common. Some of these are prayer, fasting for certain periods of the year, and some form of meditation.

Is there any question you have that you would like me to answer in upcoming newsletters? I will answer to the best of my ability and memory from the point of view of a Baha'i who is still deepening in the her chosen spiritual path.

Wishing everyone a happy and fulfilling May.
