Just Try It!

My granddaughters think poetry has to/must rhyme. They’re taught that in school, I suppose. I don’t know about you, but the thought of writing rhyming couplets makes me quiver. How will I find the right words to match the emotion in my mind and heart? You know, a lot of poetry had absolutely no rhyme scheme at all. Poetry is a wonderful art form and there is much more to it than people think. There are many, many different forms of poetry. If you typically write rhyming verse, give free verse a try; and vice versa!

Poetry can be very therapeutic.

Over the years, and through some of my most difficult days, writing poetry has been therapeutic; helping me think through issues. Sometimes it’s easier to express myself through writing. When I am feeling sad, angry, lonely, or disappointed, I try to channel the emotion into words and onto paper; allowing my heart to spill out. After such a session, I often feel better or get a new perspective. Even if you don’t think you’re a great poet, it might help you, too.

Embrace the Challenge!

As a writer, poetry can be a great way to challenge yourself because there are so many types of poetry. If you’re stuck in your writing, try writing a poem! You might even want to try writing in rhythm and write something in iambic pentameter, trochaic tetrameter, etc. Or for fun, try writing a surreal (dreamlike, stream-of-consciousness writing style) poem!

Poetry can sharpen your skills.

Poetry is an excellent learning tool because it uses a variety of aspects; such as strong word usage, metaphors, description, synesthesia, rhythm, rhyming, etc. Our story descriptions can improve so much if we practice writing more poetry. Word choices will improve and structure can be better. You just might surprise yourself.

It may sound simple (or not), but the art of poetry has more to offer than meets the eye. Every poem you write will help you grow, improve your skills, and improve as a writer. If you’re feeling frustrated about your writing, try writing a poem. It just might help!

Well written! I have found that writing poetry has helped me in my time of recovery from illness. I had to chuckle at this quote: "Poetry is a deal of joy and pain and wonder, with a dash of the dictionary."
~ Khalil Gibran - as I have a dictionary, thesaurus and sometimes even a rhyming app on hand, when I want to figure out a pattern.

All things have always influenced my poetry sorrow happiness and at times just a clear mind and a muse seems to awaken.
