~~ Activities ~~

Reading and Writing are what this site is all about, and it does an absolutely fantastic job at that. Writing.com also provides a lot of options which help support your writing, or are just plain fun. They are all listed under the Create an Item page.

Available for all members:
*Bullet* Campfire Creative
*Bullet* Madlib
*Bullet* User Poll
*Bullet* Interactive Story
*Bullet* In and Out
*Bullet* Word Search

Available for members with Basic Membership or above:
*Bullet* Message Forum
*Bullet* Crossword Puzzle

Available for members with Upgraded Membership or above:
*Bullet* Community Note
*Bullet* Group
*Bullet* Survey Form

You can use fun activities to promote your writing. A word search on character names ffrom your novel could bring pique the interest of someone.

Activities can help you make decisions where you are struggling. For example, a poll on whether the name Alissa or Jem better suits your character.

Some activities challenge you. Madlibs are a lot of fun, but it is actually quite difficult to write one with clear instructions to produce the best results. This exercise can hone your skills.

Joint writing exercises, such as Interactives and Campfires, allow you to meet and relate to other members along a common theme or interest.

So now you've created your activity and are wondering how to get it jump started.

There are a number of things you could do:
~ Take every care to make your item interesting: a good title, appropriate genres, an idea that is fresh (or a new twist on a common idea), attention to spelling and grammar, etc.
~ Make a post/addition first if it is something like a Forum, In and Out, Interactive or Campfire. Some items do not appear on search pages unless there is an entry.
~ Under the "Item Jumps" drop-down menu are two places: The Plug Page and the Activities Page. Posting your activity to these can attract participants or readers.
~ Include in your signature a link to an item. I would avoid the "please read..." type statement. A simple link is sufficient. If the title appeals to a member, they will follow it.
~ Visit other people's items of the same type; make posts if appropriate. Getting your name out there is of prime importance in getting noticed and read.

Good luck with your varied activities, and your writing, too.

Thanks for reading.

         Thanks for your support. *Smile*

Great points on novel-writing, Puditat. Speaking from experience, I have had three amazing reviewers read parts of my novel, "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. , and I reward them to keep them coming back. Lots of new information for me, though. Thanks!

It's great to hear you have some committed reviewers. Best wishes for the novel.

Thank you for this sound advice.

I must admit I have always felt reluctant to submitting a novel, or even a short story, precisely because of the risk at not getting feedback, which is why I have so far limited my contributions to writing.com to short poems.

Best wishes,
alexnuma

I hope you are now looking at sharing some longer pieces with us here. There are many people who enjoy reading short stories. *Smile*

Thanks. The advice you gave on this news letter was exactly what i was needing to have. Thanks

that's good to hear! Thank you. *Delight*

Although I am not writing a novel, yet, what great advice. You are absolutely correct on getting the reader in the first paragraph, even first sentence. And, being a newbie and wanting to real all that I can, I found myself reading a potential novel in chapters, one after the other and reviewing on each one. It was great and I spent much more time reading than I would have if all the chapters were in one item.

Also loved the way you presented it! I'm a fan!

Ooooo. Don't think I've ever had a fan before. *Laugh* It's fantastic you are tackling reading novels on WDC. Thank you for the feedback.

Thanks for the advice on getting novels viewed. I've got the first few chapters of mine in my port, but getting reviews was like pulling teeth! I asked a lot in review forums. How about, as your next topic, something on deciding which suggestions to act on and which to think about, with the posibility of deciding not to use it? I've got some questions on that subject myself.
Breezy-E ~ In College Author Icon

An excellent idea. I could tackle that as an issue. Feel free to fire through any questions you have. *Wink*

Puditat, thank you for the tips on how to get the novel read. Long works with no spaces is my number one reason for not reading these, and your advice was perfect. The second drawback for me is the length. If it must be placed into one static item, marking clear chapters is helpful. Now that we have the Review Tool to save the review, working with long novels is easier. I enjoyed reading this and found myself nodding in agreement at every line. Thanks!
esprit Author Icon

Oh, absolutely! The Review Tool is fabulous for tackling novels or any longer item. Thanks for the lovely comments. *Bigsmile*

lots of useful advice for featuring those longer stories--i'll definitely be using those when i get to that point. thank you for all the information, puditat.
