About This Newsletter

Fantasy Newsletter by Dawn

There are still different publishing options. While not everyone plans or even wants to get published, some still have the goals and focus with their writing. Different options exist for fantasy based on story length and type. What option will you take?

Letter from the editor

When it comes to writing, even with the changes in technology and advances made through the years, there are still some options and factors to consider when it comes to potential publication. Fantasy and others within speculative fiction have a variety of choices when deciding what route to take beyond the writing and editing stages. For those that wish to take the steps and want to get published, some factors can be considered.

First, one doesn't need to get published in order to be a writer. It's okay if you don't want to publish your writing. Some may find it a dream or an end goal, but if you aren't one of them, that's okay. Keep writing.

Short Fiction
For speculative fiction, there are some venues and options for those that write shorter items. This can be as little as flash or micro fiction up to even the novelette length. The lower word counts have their own areas and options for submitting in hopes of publication. Research will help to find the right venue as each will have its own specifications. Check each venue, read some of what they have published and make sure to follow all guidelines when submitting a story. It also helps to keep track of where each story has been submitted. I use good sheets (online excel) to keep track of my submissions when it comes to the short stories though I don't write many of them. Getting published with short fiction has a variety of benefits and payment offerings.

Contests
There are also contests as an option, which are related to publication. The one in particular that comes to mind, mostly because I get emails from them on occasion, is the Writer's of the Future contest. It's a quarterly contest and often those that win later publish novels that are sci-fi or fantasy related. It does have connections to Scientology but is still a contender for the publication world in speculative fiction

Self-publication
After the years, this option has become more popular and prevalent with the increased use of ebooks and online publication. It's not quite like the old days where one had to have boxes of books in the attic waiting for sales. Online has given more options with different platforms for small publishing to complete self where the author handles every element. While there is a lot of work involved, there can be big benefits to taking that path.

The Traditional
Despite the major changes, there is still the option of going what is called the "traditional" route for publishing. This involves getting an agent to help submit the writing to publishers or even just submitting direct to a publisher for those that accept unsolicited stories. The publisher, once a story is accepted, aides in many factors including editing and getting the story to different selling venues. For some, this has been the dream. It still might be there even if the publication paths have changed over the years.

Whichever path you take, or whatever you want to do with your writing, the journey is up to you. Enjoy the writing, editing and the other steps in this process. Whether you publish, share for free or whatever else you do with the writing, have fun.

Ask & Answer

If you plan to publish any of your writing, what option/path do you want to take?

“Publishing is a business. Writing may be art, but publishing, when all is said and done, comes down to dollars.” - Nicholas Sparks

"All the traditional models for doing things are collapsing; from music to publishing to film, and it's a wide open door for people who are creative to do what they need to do without having institutions block their art." - Ava DuVernay
