About This Newsletter

--- INTRO ---

Poetry! It comes in all styles and meanings. Some poems express personal feelings; others demonstrate a particular pattern. Most of us write some combination in between. I'll be offering advice on different styles and pointing out techniques to improve your poems. Enjoy *Delight* --John~Ashen Author Icon

Unofficial Workshop

Whatever your reasons for posting poetry here at Writing.Com, you get the benefits of reviews and ratings from readers. If you want to improve your craft, then in a sense this site is one big community workshop.

The easiest way to contribute to the workshop is to send someone a review, telling them what worked and what needs work still. One less common way to help everyone (and discuss poetry in a serious manner) is to write an article.

Whether you assemble information into one convenient list or create a how-to guide, your article becomes a reference for anyone using any search engine (not just the site Powersearch). People can read your contributions and be influenced without the burden of having to respond to emails. Plus, you don't have to seek out everyone who needs to learn what you have to say.

There were a couple formal workshops on the site (Bianca, Silversong) and there are some particular poetry-writing groups (japanese, traditional, children's). If you are not inclined to work on those specific projects, no problem. You can still learn anonymously from your fellows...

Ask & Answer

Moody Blue: Needs an Upgrade Author Icon asks: I have over 60 poems in my port at this point. I would like to try to submit some of them for publication. I'm new to this so what steps should I take?

Answer: First, realize that hardly anyone buys books of poems. Your best chance of getting published is to find magazines interested in your style or content. Check out my "Invalid EntryOpen in new Window. article.

Jeanette Author Icon asks: I have never tried a slam poem and would not know where to begin. I would like a link that would give a writer a guide in trying to create a slam. Thanks.

Answer: Investigate "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. for starters, then ask at "The SLAM! Green RoomOpen in new Window. [18+] if you have more questions.
