Unofficial Newsletters

Did you know that, in addition to the thirteen official Writing.com newsletters , there are also a handful of unofficial newsletters published by the members of the site? For years, Wordsmitty ✍️ Author Icon has been publishing an unofficial blogging newsletter for years (you can read them here: "Blogging Bliss Newsletters PublishedOpen in new Window.). There have been a number of unofficial science fiction newsletters over the years that have sought to differentiate themselves from the more general "fantasy" official newsletter. I edited the Unofficial Erotica Newsletter for years (old issues can be found here: "Unofficial Erotica Newsletter ArchiveOpen in new Window.), and contributed to other unofficial newsletters including ones for screenwriting, as well as specific niches like superheroes, supernatural horror, etc.

Writing newsletters can be a great way to explore a topic, and make connections with other members of the community that share the same interests. It can be a really wonderful way to build your nonfiction writing skills. And Writing.com has a bunch of great tools for managing a newsletter distribution. Some best practices include:

1. Create a WDC group and easy sign-up mechanism (like a survey form) to manage your mailing list. Groups have the ability to send a Group Email that will instantly go to everyone who's joined the group; it's a great way to handle subscriptions and publishing.

2. Come up with a consistent template so that your readers get familiar with the layout and where to find things.

3. Publish on a regular schedule. Whether it's daily, weekly, month, quarterly, or whatever, make sure your readers know when to expect issues in their inbox.

Most importantly, make sure that there isn't another similar newsletter already out there! When we participate in a site like Writing.com, especially since most of us are content creators, it's easy to instinctively think, "I really wish there were X, I should create it!" But if there's already something similar available on the site, ask yourself if what's really needed is a new product, or if there's a way you can contribute and add value to something that's already out there. Is there already a science fiction newsletter on the site? Would finding a way to collaborate on that and build it through the efforts of multiple people be a better product for the WDC community than two separate endeavors that do basically the same thing?

Whether it's a solo project or a group effort, though, I want to encourage you to consider working on a newsletter if you have an interest in nonfiction or writing for particular audiences, especially if you have expertise to share. And while the official newsletters have a number of specific requirements (being a Moderator+ in order to contribute to them, only a fixed number of NLs and slots available, etc.), the requirements for unofficial newsletters can be whatever you want them to be.

If there's a topic or type of newsletter you think is needed on Writing.com, maybe consider giving it a try. *Smile*

Until next time,

Dead Man's Curve Open in new Window. [13+]
A tale of an envious man willing to put his soul on the line in a race against the devil.
by Ethereal Owl Author Icon

EXCERPT: The roar of the engine changed to a reverberating rumble as Ron Little put his foot on the break. One hand on the sleek, black leather of the steering wheel and the other hanging outside the opened car window, letting in a breeze of chilled air of the oncoming night. It danced through the clean interior of his stingray, swept through the curly mop of hair on his head, and ruffled his snow-white button-down.

EXCERPT: This afternoon, alone, I'm doing a little day drinking that will likely end up in a lot of night drinking and undoubtedly end badly. Why? Because I got suspended without pay this morning for telling our client the truth during a meeting. Morals and ethics be d---ed, this client was being led down the garden path to h---.

EXCERPT: Standing in the doorway 'it' sees you in the dark, no matter the blankets you pull on 'it' sees you, no... Not your body, 'it' sees 'you' that person you are, the things coursing through the web of your mind, disconnected, detached from everything and everyone else... 'It' stands there, watching, that's all it ever does, yet... Your hands in a panicked rush, searching for your phone, any source of light, anything. Your eyes can't see 'it' when there's light, but your mind knows 'it' is still there watching.

(Untitled) Open in new Window. [13+]
A work in progress
by Thodin Thorsson Author Icon

EXCERPT: "This world is false” came a whispered voice.

I was parking my car when I had heard the words. Instinctively I looked around like a madman searching for the source of the voice, scowling when I realized how it looked.

They Took Him Away Open in new Window. [E]
a sample from a story that I am writing, her best friend-maybe true love- gone
by Dominique Ford Author Icon

EXCERPT: As I lay, curled in on myself, my eyes staring blankly, my thoughts begin to drift. Why am I here? Why is the world turning? Why does nobody understand?

Nobody.

Not a soul.
