Letter from the editor

I've long thought that there's a blurry line between humor and horror. For those of us who love dark humor, October is our month to shine!

Well, not shine. What's the opposite of shine? Shade? October is our month to shade.

While other people can try to take it seriously or even solemnly (or perhaps slalomy or salami), comedians find a vast trove of comedy gold amidst all the ghosts, zombies, vampires, and other spooks during Halloween season -- not to mention the low-hanging fruit of making fun of pumpkin spice everything, "sexy" Halloween costumes, and being the one trick-or-treater who got a rock.

Autumn makes me lazy, so I'm going to take this opportunity to share some funny images, videos, and memes from the wider internet this scary season.

Lots of us get in the mood starting when September ends.  Open in new Window.

Pumpkins are a great source of calories -- but also funnies.  Open in new Window.

Especially when they make their first visit to the barber.  Open in new Window.

Black cats are awesome, but they're also fair game for October funnies.  Open in new Window.

Did you know that October is Black Cat Awareness Month?  Open in new Window.

And spiders can be scary, sure, but they are our friends.  Open in new Window.

This modern classic Halloween yard decoration is never not funny.  Open in new Window.

And let's not forget just how hilarious it can be to scare the crap out of your soon-to-be-ex-friends-and-family:

So remember to put the "funny" back in "funny-size candy bar" this Halloween!

Ask & Answer

Last time, in "Cooking IIOpen in new Window., I talked about food. Again. Aren't you glad I picked a different topic this time?

QueenNormaJean maybesnow?!: I like to watch "Chopped", where they use weird ingredients sometimes. Try cooking a Geoduck or Rocky Mountain Oysters. Not for the faint of heart.

Every time you type "geoduck" you have to also type "(pronounced gooey-duck" because apparently English orthography is optional. And yes, I know what Rocky Mountain Oysters are; I hear they have a nutty flavor, but I'm not going to try them.

Quick-Quill: This is true. When cooking or doing housework and things happen at a speed that isn't realistic, things seem off. This comes to play when writing a crime/detective novel.

While time is most definitely not an illusion, our perception of it can be way off. And that can be funny. Or not.

So that's it for me for October! See you next month. Until then,

LAUGH ON!!!
