About This Newsletter

I've been clicking on the 'Read & Review' button a lot this month, and I've found it to be very enjoyable!

In this newsletter, I share some of my thoughts on this.

Letter from the editor

Dear Reader,

Lately, I've gotten addicted to hitting the 'Read & Review' button, (see the left of your screen) and I would like to share some of the excitement this has brought to my reviewing.

Basically, this button throws up items for you to review, and you get Gift Points for giving a qualifying (250+ characters) review. Gift Points vary depending on the size of the item, from 800 to 1400. There is a time-limit during which you have to complete the review.

1. Any type, any genre
The random review button throws up static items of any genre. You could be reading a spiritual poem, a sci-fi story, and a how-to essay on the same day. This widens the scope of your reading.

2. Any case colour
You could be reading a newbie now, and a senior moderator next. The author could be someone you've never met before or an online friend you've been interacting with for years. This mix of familiar and unfamiliar is exciting, and for those who are reluctant to review the higher case colours, this gives a good opportunity. (The case colours it shows are - Black, Yellow, Blue and Purple. It doesn't show Grey Cases as they don't have items in their portfolio, or Red Cases - the staff.)

3. That little timer
As soon as you click and the item shows up on screen, your time starts ticking. While the time allotted is generous -- enough for you to carefully read and comment -- it is finite. This means you cannot procrastinate, you have to review it now!

4. Those Gift Points add up ... and there are prizes!
It's really cool to watch those Gift Points add up. There's the reward itself, and then the points given by the review mixer and the daily reward system. In addition, affiliating to a group like "WdC SuperPower Reviewers GroupOpen in new Window. or "The WDC Angel ArmyOpen in new Window. and contributing relevant reviews to "Anniversary ReviewsOpen in new Window. or "Newbie Welcome WagonOpen in new Window. gets you review credits -- more points, and a chance at a Merit Badge if you are among the top 100 most credited reviewers or you complete the challenges from the respective groups and forums. (Look them up on the Public Review Pages or 'search'.)

And don't forget the site's official reviewing contest: "Good Deeds Get CASH!Open in new Window., which gives some mega prizes!

5. Authors who are active
The Read & Review button only throws up authors who have been active on site lately. Hence, you're more-or-less sure your review will be seen. Sometimes, you get an item written recently, and sometimes you get one written years ago, by an author who is active currently. (The latter can be a mixed blessing ... sometimes, the recipient is happy to re-visit an old item, sometimes the review may not be helpful.)

6. Enhances your own creativity
Through it all, as with any reviewing, reading and analyzing others' items ultimately helps in improving your own writing. Crafting a good review is a valid writing exercise in itself. Here's one I had fun doing, inspired by the original item: Invalid Review

7. Your choice
Finally, you do get to choose not to review a particular item if you'd really rather not. You merely click the button again, and it'll present you with another item! Hey, this is a big site, there are a lot of items by active authors to review!

So -- are you going to click the Read & Review button now? Hope so!

Thanks for listening!
