Reviewing Contests and Activities

Lots of members review stories and poetry, but do you review contests and activities? While you're looking through the listings on "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. and "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window., not only look at the item to see if it is something you'd like to enter, but take a moment and give it a review. Certainly, if there is a rule that is vague, or you don't see the deadline, choose to send the host an email and point that out.

I think it's also important to look at the timing of your review. If there are only two days left to enter the contest and you critique their item, the host will probably not make any changes unless they plan to host another round of that particular contest/activity. But I still feel you should make your comments and help that host improve for the next time.

Positive comments are always welcome, if you see a contest or activity that looks interesting or fun, send a quick review! These appear on the review page and someone might be intrigued enough to click and visit the page. You can help the host by dropping a promotion on your newsfeed or helping a newbie get the item onto the site promotion pages.

Have you ever looked at the Who's Online page? It's a cool feature you can find by clicking "Writing.Com Tools" in the left column and then clicking "Who's Online". Preferred members on up can add a billboard next to their name in your account settings. Link your item there too!

All in all, let's be helpful, let's be positive and as always, Write On!

Last month's "Contests & Activities Newsletter (April 14, 2021)Open in new Window. question: Did you know about item alias? What do you use your alias words for?

Item Alias List Open in new Window. (ASR)
How many item aliases are there?
#2087716 by ruwth Author IconMail Icon

Whata SpoonStealer Author Icon: I *Heart* aliases. There's {item:whataland} "WhataLandOpen in new Window. and {item:cnotecity} "C-Note CityOpen in new Window. and probably others I forgot about...I dunno if many peeps use them, but they should! When you have to type the number of each item dozens of times in a document, item aliases become important. It's easier for most people to remember words, rather than numbers. So that item "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. is so much easier to just type in "WhataLandOpen in new Window.. That's all they are...

Lilli 🧿 ☕ Author Icon: Thank you for the handy-dandy list of aliases!!! I saved 'em! Thanks!

keyisfake Author Icon: My author's name is an alias. So is the name I use here.

Dragonfly Author Icon: Ok, now I know I must be dense because I have no idea what alias words are.
