I met a man who wasn't there.

Do you believe in ghosts?

Whether you believe they actually exist or not, the spirits of the departed are a great subject for horror stories. Even people who doubt their existence are often drawn to legends of ghosts and haunted places.

It is difficult to find any area that does not have any local legends of ghosts or haunted places. Some legendary ghosts are benign and helpful, others are malevolent and dangerous, while many are simply there, and do not interact with humans.

Some ghosts are said to manifest as vague forms such as a light or mist. Others are said to look just like living people, and are only revealed to be ghosts when they vanish or walk through a wall. Others are said to be invisible and might only be heard walking, laughing, crying, or moaning. Some ghosts, such as poltergeists, are able to manipulate physical matter and may cause a lot of trouble by throwing and breaking things.

Even a ghost that isn't "real" can be a good subject for a horror story. Most supposed hauntings can be traced to a logical cause. Maybe a character is trying to scare other characters by making it look as if a house or other place is haunted.

If you use a ghost in your story, try to find a unique way for it to manifest. For example, instead of the commonly reported glowing orbs, your ghost might be a dark orb or shadow.

Something to try: Write a story based on a local ghost legend from your area.
