Pleased to Write a Pleiades



My first husband was really into astronomy. We had a nice-sized telescope and he even put up those glow in the dark stars on our bedroom ceiling. It's because of him that I know the few constellations that I do, including Pleiades.

Pleiades aka the seven sisters is one of the many constellations in the night sky. According to skyandtelescope.org, “In Greek lore, these seven sisters were the daughters of Atlas and Pleione.”

In my poetry research I found a poetry form—and a variation with the same name that we will explore today.




Pleiades


Craig Tigerman, former editor of the now defunct Sol Magazine, created this form over two decades ago.




MUST HAVES


–One word title—you pick the word but your title must only be one word long.

--line count: 7

--Each line begins with the same letter as the beginning of the title (Example: Title is “Serenity” then each of the 7 lines of your poem begins with the letter S.)

--number of stanzas: 1




COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?


--topic, theme

--meter

--rhyme




Variation NOTES



The poet, Hortensia Anderson, decided to create a variation to this form that adds the following rule:

--meter: syllabic

--6 syllables per line


I suggest that if you're going to make a restriction for a seven-lined poem named after the Seven Sisters a more apropos variation is as follows:

--meter: syllabic

--7 syllables per line


So loads of choices here: follow the original, one of the variations or create your own variation.
