ou don't have to be English to know all about Jack the Ripper mystery. It is probably one of the most famous murder mysteries of all time and the simple reason why it is so is that, to this day, no one knows for sure who Jack the Ripper was.
Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. In both the criminal case files and contemporary journalistic accounts, the killer was called the Whitechapel Murderer and Leather Apron.
Scrolling through the Ranker's Mysteries the other day, I run into Jack the Ripper one about how they finally discovered a person behind those 1888's murders. I remember counting in my head how many times I've read different theories, involving different people as possible suspects and how I was in awe that a whole century later historians and investigators are still trying to identify the right person. I also remembered thinking what would happen if they truly and finally figure it all out? Would Jack the Ripper mystery lose its popularity once it is solved? The answer is it probably would because, at this point, it is not the revelation of the real killer that makes it exciting and popular but completely opposite—the idea that it is still unsolved and will probably stay that way for many years ahead.
There are currently around 114 non-fiction books, written entirely on the subject of Jack the Ripper. In many of them, the authors are exposing different ideas and theories of suspects and motives for the Whitechapel murders, some of which are quite extraordinary and unique. This mystery is an inexhaustible source of inspiration and there is no doubt that there will be many more books in the future. But, how long would it take until readers simply had it enough and give up on reading to see who done it? Maybe there will always be readers who want to know just like there are still historians and investigators, learning about those cases and trying to figure out who the real Jack the Ripper was. I kept thinking, is it really the revelation at the end of the mystery case that keeps us motivated to keep going, or is it the sole idea of the unknown that keeps us intimidated? When it comes to Jack the Ripper mystery, it is the latter for me. After all, it probably wouldn't spark the world's interest for over a century if they found a person who did it soon after those murders occurred. They would just become neatly organized files in a forgotten drawer, somewhere in the police station.
If you love to write murder mysteries, consider taking a little bit different path and write a story where readers never find out who did it.

Excerpt: The noise seemed to come at us from all sides. A tooth-grinding squeal like rusted gears. The sound disrupted all dialogue. We glanced at the wall, looked at each other, shuddered.
