About This Newsletter

FOOD TRUCKS

I *Heart* food trucks. But you knew that? I finally got around to trying that Sushi food truck that visits Castaic. I’ll definitely go back, but it was a bit pricey. I tried the Albcore which was good. I got a “Heart Attack” appetizer which was a stuffed jalepino with spicy tuna and Sushi roll (spicy tuna) on a stick. That was best part. Give your favorite food truck a shout out!

So the boys started school online. While they are making it work, there’s nothing like the real thing. My young one has been Zoom Boomed a bit, but hopefully with the new upgrade on zoom (aka the paid account) that will be cut back a lot!

FALL FOODS

September is the start of fall. The Autumn Equinox is just around the corner, occurring on 22 SEP this year. In most parts of the world, the temperatures are cooling down. The sun is setting sooner. The shadows are longer. Pumpkin spice latte takes over the coffee bars. It’s a time to harvest the gardens, beans, beats, squash, (yellow, zucchini, spaghetti) carrots, radishes, rhubarb, corn, and in October, pumpkins! Menus become more seasonal, with pot pies, fruit pies and stuffed peppers. Where am I going with this? I thought I’d talk about food and how it plays into our romantic natures.

Letter from the editor

I remember when my husband and I first met (which was in Germany in 1990. We were both active duty military and stationed in Bad Hersfeld, Germany) we loved going on dates – and most of those dates involved sharing a meal a local restaurant. We also went volksmarching, visited touristy places like Garmish and Berchesgarten, and watched movies, but the bulk of our dates was going out to eat.

There was the Italian restaurant down the stairs from the Kaserne and I LOVED the cannellini there. There was another Italian place called the “Alt Garden” where I loved to have the tomato soup. Just south of the town was a home styled German restaurant that had the best fries and jagerschnitzel. There was a Greek restaurant in the heart of town called “Naxos” that had the best gyros. The meat was perfectly spiced. The taztiki was delicious. Closer to my apartment, there was a Chinese restaurant that was like “immigrant” dining like Beca Di Bepo where you sat at long tables next to people you didn’t know. My favorite there was anything with beef.

Even now, faded by 30 years, these are strong memories. I remember meals and laughing and falling in love. Sharing food with those we love can be memorable events.

Chocolat is a movie that comes to mind where the heroine runs a chocolat shoppe and earns the towns people trust with her food. While Viviane is a drifer, she and her chocolat shoppe decide to settle down as a little bit of luck and chocolat help cement her relationship with Johnny’s Depp’s character.

For me, A Walk in the Clouds, (Keanu Reeves) is another movie that uses food to move the romance forward. Cooking and food, and harvesting is very important to Victoria and her family. Through the food, cooking and harvesting, Keanu Reeves character grows closer to Victoria.

Sharing food, cooking together, and enjoying a nice meal is a heartwarming way for couples to come together (fall in love) but cooking together is a great way to keep the spark alive in any relationship. It gives one an opportunity to learn about each other, likes and dislikes, and to make memories that will last a lifetime.

Question for you: Where was your first “foodie” date with your partner? Is the memory still vivid or has it faded away over time?

FEEDBACK FROM MY ROMANCE/LOVE NL DATED: 12 AUG 2020:

Bikerider Author IconMail Icon
I enjoy all of your newsletters, but your August 12th newsletter was pertinent to a romance/historical fiction novel I'm writing about a couple who fall in love during the summer following their graduation. The conflict I'm using for the boy's character is that he has fallen in love with a girl from an affluent family. His insecurity is his fear that he won't be able to provide the kind of life she's used to. His girlfriend's insecurity blossoms when the young man joins the army. The story takes place during WWII. She learns she's pregnant when he leaves for Europe so her worry/insecurity is whether he'll make it home. Her pregnancy obviously causes problems at home with her domineering father.
I think the parents of young adults can be a conflict for a young couple, especially if, like in my story, one parent is dead set against the relationship and tries to sabotage it.

Yes, I agree. Parents are a source of conflict for a young couple. If I remember, several daughters were forced to give up their newborns for adoption. I think the struggles are real for those young adults caught in the middle.
