To Meet the Reaper Early [E] Death is not always the end, sometimes it's a brand new beginning |
HAPPY WDC ACCOUNT ANNIVERSARY FROM "Anniversary Reviews" First Impressions: The first thing that jumped out at me was the descriptions. The first paragraph was a great hook because I understood just enough of what was going on to want to know more. The title and description hinted at death, and the way the narrator’s life flashed before his eyes confirmed it: Something had happened to him and his life was ending. The second paragraph jumped back in time, seconds or centuries, the narrator was no longer sure, and told the readers how he came to be there. Again, I loved the details you included here, like the way the cold air nipped at his skin, but the line I liked best came a few paragraphs later where you mentioned the loud crunching of fresh snow being compacted. I actually stopped for a moment to reflect that I had never thought of the sound in that way but it was spot on. This was when we found out what happened to him, how he came to be in that moment in the first paragraph. Suggestions: I stumbled a little over the way he saw his own body In the distant below. My first reaction was to suggest changing “distant” to “distance” but then I wondered if you actually meant “in the below, which was distant”. I’m not sure if that works - if nothing else, it tore me out of the story for a moment so I’m mentioning it in case it was an error you might want to fix. Otherwise, I thought this story was very well written and I didn’t notice any errors. Final Thoughts: The meeting with the Reaper was very interesting. He didn’t come across as scary as he stood with a checkerboard in hand, only perhaps a little when his disappointment at seeing the narrator too early became apparent. The narrator’s reaction was entirely understandable at this point because it wouldn’t be the kind of greeting one would expect. But he didn’t get an answer to his questions. I loved the ending when he realised that somehow, for whatever reason, he got another chance and decided to make the most of it. I thought this was a great story, and I really enjoyed the read. ** Image ID #2154080 Unavailable ** My review has been submitted for consideration in "Good Deeds Get CASH!" .
