A spacecraft on a secret mission on another planet, collides with a large native sea ship. While the aliens are able to save the people, it's decided, to keep their mission a secret, to take those they rescued to another planet. Somehow, this group manages to not only survive, but thrive, eventually colonizing other nearby planets. Makes one wonder what will happen to them in the future.
