“Do you play?” asks Bennett. He continues, “I’m on the football team, and Adam here’s a fan. He used to play, but not anymore.”
“Why not?” you ask, without thinking.
“I got too fat!!” Adam states, laughing and thumping his gut. "Too fat and slow, that's what coach says."
“Too fat?" say Pete in wonder.
"Yeah, can you believe it, thrown off the football team for being too fat! Too 'slow' too,” Adam repeats. “I guess it's just too much food!”
"And don't you believe the 'too slow' part," adds Bennett, "fat Adam here is as fast in the 40 yard dash as I am! Somedays I wish our O-line had a few guys of his bulk out there, to keep up with the enemies' hogs."
“Yeah, it's not right, it’s just coach’s unfairness!” exclaimed Stacey. “Just because he’s a hardbody, he thinks everybody on the team should be. He's not looking around - there’s guys a lot fatter than Adam playing ball on other school’s teams.”
“Yeah, well,” says Adam, a touch scornful, “if he wants to lose games because he doesn’t want to have guys my size on his O-line, well, that’s his problem. I figure by mid-season, he'll have so many O-line injuries among his 'lightweights', he'll be begging for big guys to come back. In the meantime, I play recreational ball and try out for semi-pro!”
“Yeah,” adds Moisha, “he’s great on the field! Maybe we should just change schools...”
As Moisha speaks, Robbie waves to four more people who are approaching - two more more girls, and two more guys, one of whom...
