"Um, Lord Alucand?" you wondered, "Why not send me to Pern instead? It actually has an organized order of dragon riders present who would be willing to fight for us."
The weyrleader only gave what would have been a scholarly grin, "Giljaras my lad, think of this as a long term project. Our war against the Malthinae may last for many years, and unlike Pern, which you mention already has a solidified political structure, you will have time in Alagaesia to form the forces we require. You'll provide reconaissance in Alagaesia, which is for all we know a land that can be ripe for colonization. Any loose ends will be accommodated for so you may properly carrying out your mission"
"Is that so? But its also a rather convenient way to get me out of your hair and if I end up getting killed in that medieval shit hole, you can deny all possible involvement. Heck, if you're planning to get rid of me, at least you could send me off to the front where I can take some of the Malthinae down with me," you retorted.
Alucand's expression did not budge, "If it were truly up to me, then yes, I would send you to the most dangerous front where you could die honorably, yet the fact is that somehow, the Moderator, in his infinite wisdom, decided that you were to have this power to traverse realms. So, at the very least I will get some use out of you and Drakreanor, and who knows, if your mission succeeds perhaps you could even stay in Alagaesia, but if you choose to disobey your weyrleader, I will pronounce you as a traitor to the United Weyrs" he threatened. Though you didn't think he would go that far, the problem was, how could you know? Maybe he did? You still hated the Malthinae enough that you would do whatever it took to defeat them, but it was not comforting realizing just how much 'anything' encompassed. Yet what you felt for sure was that you to get out of Angelos Weyr and its slimy politics and backdealing.
Still, why Alagaesia in particular? Did Alucand know something about that land, or the conditions of the dimensional travel that made him so eager to thrust him into that place?
Who could know for sure? What you did know was that you didn't want to play musical Realms with Alucand any longer, so perhaps it was just better to just pick a realm and let it be over with... Who knew, maybe Alagaesia wouldn't be quite so bad.
Right?
