Chapter #5

Marriage or War

    by: me_duh Author IconMail Icon
The king and queen walked into Isabelle's chanbers to find her seated by the window gazing out, her cheeks still glistening with freshly shed tears. This would have softened any parent's heart, but unfortunately these two were still under the influence of their modified cups of tea.

"Isabelle, we need to speak," her father said in his empty monotone. Isabelle showed no sign of having heard what he said, or even of knowing they were standing a few feet away.

"We have wonderful news for you." Her mother's voice echoed that of her father's. At hearing this Isabelle swirled around in her chair to face them.

"You mean I don't have to get married?!" She was leaping from her seat ready to jump into the arms of the king and queen and embrace them in a loving hug, but her heart shattered when they voiced their reply.

"Actually, we have moved up the wedding date. It will take place tomorrow afternoon." Isabelle returned to her sitting position and again stared out the window.

"Get out," she whispered. Whether is was whatever compassion they had for her, or lack there of, Kind Edward and Queen Jasmine obeyed their daughter's command. Tears once again stained the fair skin of the young princess. Supper was brought to her by one of the servants, and when he returned to retrieve her plate he found that not only had she not touched the food, but she had not moved from her place before the window.

With the lights extinguished and only minute amounts of starlight filtering through the windows no one saw or heard when young Isabelle slipped into her bed for a peaceful night. She woke up rested and refreshed without a care n the world, that is until she realized that the events of the previous night had not been some terrible nightmare as she had hoped. Luckily she did not have long to dwell on this fact, for a moment later she found that her parents were seated by the window she had been so attached to the night before. Still clutching to her covers, Isabelle brought herself to an upright position and stared intently at her parents refusing to say the first word.

"Dear Isabelle. We were cruel last night. We didn't try to explain anything or to comfort you, and for that we sincerely apologize." The king's voice held much sorrow and guilt, and it was obvious how much he cared for the daughter he had so severely wronged. Her mother on the other could not bring herself to say a word, and she looked to be on the verge of tears.

"Does that mean you will reconsider, put an end to this marriage nonsense, and let me live my life?" Isabelle's voice was not cold, instead it mirrored that of her parents' the previous night. At this point Queen Jasmine's silent tears began to fall. With his arm around his wife, Kind Edward replied:

"I'm afraid that just isn't possible. Prince Hector already has the entire wedding planned out, everything is arranged. And from the impression I got from him last night, neither he nor his father will be pleased to hear that we wish to cancel at the last moment. If we do not go through with this, I fear that the kingdom of Callorn will declare war on us. Even if we win the war, the damage will be immeasureable, much of it will be unrepairable, not to mention the lives that will be lost. The kingdom will stand by our decision if it comes to that, but their is a small rebel force building, and a war could increase their numbers and power, and we will be forced to fight a war among ourselves. I can't let that happen, and as the crowned princess, neither should you."

They sat there for what seemed hours; Isabelle thinking the matter over, the king awaiting her decision ready to declare war if she wanted, and the queen silently weeping to herself afraid of losing her daughter either to this Prince Hector or both to war(whether if be abroad or in their backyard).

"What do you say Isabelle?"
