Tentatively and with a hint of shame, Caroline kissed Edmund on the cheek. "Happy Birthday sir."

"You can do better than that, with your strawberry lips, Caroline," commanded Edmund.

Caroline shook her head and blushed. It was not that she did not admire Edmund Withenstrop, but she knew that he could have her removed from Loxley Manor in an instant.

"Don't be such a shy thing, just one kiss on the lips,"

"I will, sir, but only if..."
