You pull Kayak up on the sandbar and turn her on her side to make a windbreak for the depression in the dry sand that will be your bed. You lie on your back and gaze at the stars. A meteor streaks across the night sky.
A noise off in the trees disturbs your reverie. It sounds like a grunt and a snuffle. An animal? You sit up quickly wishing you had looked for a big stick before you lay down. Quietly you feel around the ground for a makeshift weapon. Your hand closes on a large rock.
The snuffles and grunts draw closer until you feel the creature is only a short distance away.
You throw the rock as hard as you can and are rewarded with a loud "Yelp!" from the creature. Bulls-eye! You hear it shuffle off through the underbrush.
But now you are worried. Will it come back? Are there more of them? You don't want to lay down and sleep. You are afraid you will be attacked in your sleep.
You sit down in the sand with your back to the water. In front of you the brush is thick and very dark. The canyon wall is behind the brush, just an inky blacknes, but when you look up, you can see it's silhouette against the stars.
You wonder what's happening, who you are and why you are here. If you could only remember. But when you try to think about the past you meet a black wall, just like the walls of this canyon. You remember waking up in the room with three doors, but nothing from your life before.
There is no repeat of the animal incident and finally you fall asleep.
