Glenn swatted the little bug, then dropped the papers he'd used for the job into the trash can. He didn't even give a glance to his destructive handiwork.
He wondered why Professor Brevard wasn't working. The man was almost always in the laboratory in the evening. Glenn shrugged. It didn't really matter. The guy didn't even know his name.
Still, Glenn admitted to more than a passing interest in the handsome professor. The guy had a quality to him. Glenn sighed. Guess he wouldn't be running into the professor this evening. He moved on with his janitor's cart to finish his rounds.
One task was tossing the bag of garbage collected in the laboratory into a dumpster in back of the science building.

Eric's story ended where it began — in his laboratory, where he had invented the instrument of his demise.
Because of the secretive nature of his research, no one ever realized what Eric had achieved. His unexplained disappearance aside, the world moved ahead. Eventually, the lab was re-assigned and Eric's equipment was dismantled and packed into storage.
